I'm a retired chief of police and every state has different laws. I can only reference Ohio law. 1. No law about sewer caps 2. Merging onto highway you must always yield. 3. No special drivers livense for any size RV. 4. Our local laws did not allow rvs to be lived in. Run for your local council and push to have the law changed. Thats what councils are for. 5. No special laws for RV parking but again local laws can be changed and put in place. Run for council and change the law. My dads town has a law about no RVs in front or to the side of the house. Behind is okay. 6. CCW law is the same in a moving vehicle as in a moving RV. Once parked and established as a residence then ccw law does not apply. 7. Watercraft inspection is legal for ODNR to do but not for local Leo to preform. 8. Length laws and weights do apply to non commercial vehicles. Each state is different. Ohio only allowes one trailer to be towed not any combination of more. Example truck and 5th wheel is okay. Truck and 5th wheel pulling a boat is illegal. 9. Bridge weight and height limits apply to everyone not just commercial vehicles. 10. Parking overnight in a rv, big rig or private car have the same requirements. 11. Firewood transport is a location to location. Generally don't take it. We had/have the emerald ash borer insect in ohio and it is a violation to remove wood from this area. I don't believe its a state law but maybe a federal violation. Hope this helps and please check you local or state law. Most communities are able to pass there own laws and regulations. Ome small example the town that I worked in at was illegal to sell beer until aroumd 2002.

I live in a major city in eastern Iowa. It is illegal to park/store your RV on your property IF it extends in front of your house. My neighbor had to put a pad beside his unattached garage that sat toward the back of his property to park his large 5th wheel. Since he and his wife are getting up in years, they no longer have an RV, so I mow their lawn and blow their snow in exchange for parking my travel trailer on their pad beside their unattached garage.

We bought property in Northern WI. It was land zoned recreational. The town allowed Dr A few years later we were told we would have to put it in storage from November until April. Some town board member had a storage facility and wanted to make some extra money. We all threatened to remove our rv's completely and not use them at all. The land would be vacant. Since the property taxes were only $50. It was no big deal. We also mentioned that the revenue the town would lose would be thousands of dollars. We eat at their resturants, purchase groceries at their stores, rent slips for our boats, purchase fuel at their gas stations, etc. That ended that talk. We were able to keep our rv on our property all year. They can't make us build either because the land won't perk for septic.

For the last 4 years I have parked overnight at Florida rest stops monthly no issues (I travel for work from Louisiana to all over Florida). It is one of my favorite places. I asked once and they said as long as you do not put your feet down and open your slide, you are not officially camping, they consider it resting like the rigs. I think that is the difference. I have a class c, so I have stayed most places. Rest stops, Cracker Barrel, truck stops etc. I will avoid Walmart if possible for safety reasons. Lastly I would never travel to a place I do not know without my long range hole puncher.

Our HOA requires an email to inform them about parking our Rv in front of the house to load it or unload it. If you get caught doing this without informing the HOA. You get a $50 fine. You cannot have your Rv parked anywhere on your property. You cannot park it in your garage. If it fits. We were considering a HiLo Rv to begin with. We just bought another home where there is no HOA. City restrictions prohibit parking in the street, but your driveway or backyard is permitted. I am not a fan of HOA’S

A friend of mine is a city officer and he told me yes there is a 72 hr law in this town for any vehicle you park on the street, BUT, he said you only have to move the parked vehicle a short distance, not a 10th of a mile but if you put a mark on the tire to indicate 12 noon, you only have to move it to indicate 1201 PM

Unfortunately some of the lower ply tires still have J speed rating which is around 65mph. That's why you need to look for speed ratings L for 75mph or M for 80 mph.

@@charlesleon1071 Thanks for that update on the tire speed rating in which I did check mine, its rating is S. All my reading and research recommends not driving over 65mph for safety purposes, even though tire rating can be higher. The load rating is also important. Thank you again for pointing that out. I’m Still learning and trying to be safe at the same time. 😊

The sewer cap is regulated by FEDERAL DOT laws. You are technically required to have a cap on the fresh water supply line. Feds say that ALL pipes that are attached to a tank that holds any type of fluid to have a "safety cap" at the end of the pipe.

The only”laws” you mentioned that we are guilty of are… #1 staying overnight at rest stops. We have only stopped for a quick 8 hr nap when we decide it’s just not safe for me to be behind the wheel anymore. But then we only RV in the Western half of the states and I think Colorado is the only one with that restriction…we’ve never seen it enforced however. #2 driving with the propane on. We’ve travelled that way for 40+ years…until now. I am about to complete the installation of a solar system with an inverter. We will now be able to travel with the inverter turned on while the engine and the sun keep the battery’s at full charge. Very interesting video! I’ve recently started looking at the harvest host organization. Not quite sure yet if it’s right for us as we feel we’d be “forced (?)” into spending money at these places where we may not have that extra to spend. As a disabled veteran money issues are why we only get to make one or two short trips a year that extra drain on the budget just isn’t in the cards fir most of the time.
@rodneyrochon190120 күн бұрын
Yes driving your RV with the sewer cap not in place is a violation, generally cited under the health & safety codes not the traffic code. Speed limits while towing are related to the weight of your rig. Vehicles over 10000 lbs have to follow the speed limits for trucks. Any and all watercraft including standup paddle boards and kayaks have to stop at state watercraft inspection stations to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. (Retired Deputy Sheriff)

Agree. I don't think you should be able to do what you want HOA or not. Some HOAs even ban in house guests longer than 2 weeks. Ridiculous. The only thing I can agree with is huge weeds and dry brush because of fires. I am irritated that parking and sleeping is getting harder for people. 1- how many times have we heard or read "Don't drive tired, pull over and sleep." THEN make it illegal!. grrrr. We are a little fortunate in that we are a rural tourist area and there's a ton of RV's in driveways... so I don't think that'll be an issue ever here.

I have a Beautiful property I purchased to build a home all myself in Tobyhann, PA, and I keep our 30ft new Travel Trailer on the Property while I build the new house. The township reached out to me and said I can't do it and need to move it off the property, if I didn't I would be fined $250 a day. But I reached out to the Township and told them I'm not living it I'm just keeping it there to stay in when I travel from my NJ home to build the house on the weekends. So the Township allowed it, Thank goodness. As long as I don't stay in it longer then one week at a time until I get a CO for the new house. So your right each township has their own Rules for parking your RV on your own property.

I think the reasoning behind not being allowed to take wood from campsite to campsite might have to do with the idea that you might be unknowingly taking species of insects from one place to another. Some insects if you bring them to another region can be an invasive species and decimate the ecosystem. I think that’s why they give tickets for that to try to mitigate that from happening frequently. If any of you are wondering why that might be.

Own home in Iowa Town… we can park 5th Wheel on our property, can’t park in driveway due to short driveway length, can’t cross public easements on “grass” (street to yard), although adding a new driveway, can then back 5th onto property … yard or 2nd Driveway without issue. So we can park & store RV in back yard while homebase. If your state has no CDL requirement, it’s not needed in States that require their Resident to have CDL.

We learned about Colorado no overnight parking in rest stops a couple of years ago, coming from Nevada we didn't think we would have an issue to sleep overnight. We did make it to a BLM spot up in the mountains though. Because of that experience we joined Harvest Host it saved us big time. We headed back to Reno from Oregon but was one day ahead of our reservation at the State Park, we thought no big deal we would just stay at a truck stop/casino that we used once before. NO they would not allow RVs anymore because of the homeless problems. I found an Alpaca farm on the Harvest Host network and got a response right away. We loved it

Re: firewood. Never got a ticket, but had wood confiscated. Taking across US Canada border is strictly controlled. But if you are going to move wood, the issue is really with the insects living between the wood and the bark. In Indiana, where they actually have certified firewood, it is either heated to kill the insects or had the bark removed or is scrap lumber. Bringing in wood that is scrap lumber or without bark seems to pass the requirement. Note, if you have the bark removed, you can see if there is any actual burrowing into the wood itself. Don't transport if you find these signs. But it is a real issue where invasive species can wipe out entire types of trees from an area.

Bought my Class A rig in OH. I live in PA. Questioned salesperson and Tech rep if I need special license to drive this heavy 36' rig. "No," they all replied. 6 months later on a FB RV post I read about a debate about RV licenses. Oops, PA was one of 6 in the list. Immediately I took my test and got my license upgraded to drive the rig. Oops, I never did specifically ask the OH dealership people about PA licenses. They were correct in OH no special license was required. And someone from OH or IN can drive my rig without a license upgrade, but no not me in PA. This is a very tricky one and so many do not understand the rules vary from state to state.

New to the channel. My thought on why many laws against RVs have to do with unhoused or homeless people. Many people are buying rundown RVs and are causing a problem for many communities. I am not judging those on hard times, by the grace of God I'm not in their shoes. I think if the housing problem improves, laws might be relaxed.

More and more municipalities are outlawing or limiting living in mobile homes, as in Tiny Houses (on wheels), because they can’t tax them as property. Unfortunately, RVs got sucked in under that umbrella, but as another poster mentioned, explaining to the town officials got him a waiver (and having an actual taxable building helped I'm sure). My city, and now the county, are slowly attempting to outlaw homeless people by banning sleeping in any vehicle (including RVs) in certain parts of the city/county, and those areas are growing each year.
@leecox151318 күн бұрын
RV owners who plan to park their rig in areas that are considered illegal by HOAs or local government should have checked out these legal points prior to purchasing their RV. If they had felt that they could not or did not wish to abide by the rules, they should have thought twice before the purchase. Parking RVs in front of houses is considered an eyesore, and rightly so.

National parks require you buy firewood from the county the campground is in or USDA certified heat treated wood. They also sell expensive, crappy firewood at the ranger station. My cheapest option is buying the certified wood at my local Kroger before I leave home! Upon check in they ask if you brought your own firewood and where it came from but they do not inspect it!

But most people have one in there yard. they disconnect it when they come to inspect. then hook it back up. They are renting them out .

Didn't break this law and found it really strange the way it was enforced. This happened years ago in Michigan when there was a outbreak of a insect that was killing trees, (I don't remember the insect or type of tree) Anyway it was and I think still is illegal to transport fire wood from the lower peninsula across to the upper peninsula. The Mackinaw Bridge has the toll gate on the upper peninsula side, where they used to ask you if you had any fire wood with you. If so they confiscated it just after the toll gate and several times I saw large piles of fire wood there, the thing I found strange was they took your fire wood after you were already in the upper peninsula, maybe they sprayed it down right away I don't know. Yes they did prevent it from going any farther, but it was already over the bridge. I think the rule is not to transport fire wood more than 50 miles from where it was cut down.

Finally, a good reason to buy and use those sawdust/wax fake fire logs. Although, I have no idea if you could put one out to save for tomorrow.

Each province in canada wont allow any wood from another province if its for fire wood. You cant have any fuel containers on your vehicle that exceed the amount that the vehicles tank can hold

Your RV is registered to operate on the public roadways. You pay a fee to the Motor Vehicle division, you pay for required insurance, and you get a sticker for your plate. This is typical of all the vehicles you drive. Operation of a motor vehicle includes parking either in a public or private space as long as there is adequate room to do so. Parking on the street for any vehicle is generally 72 hours to prevent abandon vehicles, but they have to tag/notify you first. There is no requirement stated when you pay or renew your yearly tag that is different as to where you can/can't park. You have the right to free travel within the boundaries of the entire United States. Local city ordinances set up rules that exclude some areas that you can park, but they can be challenged if they violate your rights. But this is a huge hassle and cost time and money. None of this seems to apply to homeless, as they park and stay anywhere with impunity.

Non residents of canada cant camp on government ( crown land) without a permit. No camp fires , but you can buy fire wood.
@janicedoman331716 күн бұрын
Would like to mention that when you leave your camp spot always leave it cleaner than you found it.... I work at a campground and it's amazing how many irresponsible campers leave trash in their site and fire pit, like burned up beer bottles and cans, diapers, doggie poo bags, plastic, last nights dinner or morning breakfast leftovers, bacon grease, etc etc etc....... These people had a clean camp when they arrived thanks to the campground employees...... I want to have a sign that says your mommy doesn't work here so pick up after yourself.....😡

The biggest one I see that was not mentioned is exceeding the GVWR. Sadly this is rarely an issue (with RV's) until a collision occurs. Then it ends ups being a nightmare for the vehicle owner.

Harvest host requires you to spend money, usually a minimum of $20 is the norm. Us on fixed incomes can't afford it. First having watch you in a long while. I realize you earn money from your sponsor but I pay for youtube premium to avoid commercials/ads. What you and others have not included are the states and cities that restrict width. Most are east coast states. We were going to drive through Savanah years ago until we found out the city restricts the width of vehicles including RVs. Our wide body motorhome was too wide. Most that have limits set it to 8 ft unless you are commercial vehicle aka truckers.

a lot of places i have camped at it is a crime to gather downed wood for a camp fire. and this is not at "camp grounds" but out in the wilds. but out there in cal it may just be a crime to have a camp fire... wild fire dangers. and not all camping areas sell fire wood, but legal to have a camp fire. so you are required to bring it in. but never bring in ANYTHING into ca as of the food sellers, and wood venders do not like it. nevada does not care, most of az does not care. new mexico? utah?

I used to have an RV in Ga since 1994 and parked it in the yard. Around 2010 a zoning officer informed me I was not supposed to park an RV in my driveway . I challenged then that I should be grandfathered since it had been there for over 20 years, told the to check google map videos they do annually. Did not hear anymore from them. I sold the RV in 2017 due to health issues .

You folks seem like nice people. But there are many people that see RV owners as being Just like Cousin Eddy from Christmas vacation. Truckers mostly despise RV.s and the people that have them. in many states RV's are nothing but homeless housing and the mess and filth that comes with that. Some of those laws that you think are ridiculous, are community responses to the public distaste for the activities that RV bring.
