The discourse around the potential of blockchain technologies to dramatically shift revenue potential for creators typically centers on non-fungible tokens (NFTs). They're frequently thought of as the best thing to happen to creativity since the iPad, or the worst thing for the environment since the invention of oils spills! But, blockchain technologies have so much more to offer creators than simply minting digital art; as a foundational technology, they will likely shift how artists access and share resources, collaborate across boards, and pay and get paid.
This talk will provide brief background on blockchain technologies before sharing the work students in my Creating, Funding, & Distributing Stories with Web 3 course are doing to build Artafex DAO, a student-led organization seeking to democratize access to creative knowledge and equipment.
Lauren Ruffin (she/her) is Associate Professor of Worldbuilding and Visualizing Futures at Arizona State University where she explores the unprecedented and rapid political and social changes taking place in every facet of our lives, largely due to advances in technology. Her research centers on the best practices organizations and companies should embed to ensure that their platforms are safe, equitable, profitable, and joyful for all users, and particularly users from Black and Indigenous, disabled, and queer communities.
