uke derives from Japanese ukeru "to receive" Like as in catching a pitcher's throw. It's a relatively dated/reductive term that is only particularly applicable within yaoi fandom, where most modern JP BL fans will refer to dominant or submissive ends of the pairing as left or right. Also I would advise against using seme/uke to refer to anything outside of yaoi, which tbf can have nonbinary individuals.
