I’m a 9. I once dated a sexual 4. I remember we would fight because they would express such deeply sad and complex emotion (sometimes so complex I thought damn I’ve never had THAT day) and my immediate reaction would be to say something positive and offer a solution and probably around the 2-3x I did this, they yelled I DONT WANT A SOLUTION and I remember thinking why the hell would someone not want a solution to this? Lol we didn’t last too long but remained friends. I intro’d them to the enneagram and once I learned they were a 4, it all made sense. Since then, I have definitely learned to let 4s just tell you how they feel without having to negate it with something positive.

Thank you so much for sharing! It can be really confounding to be in relationship with someone who sees the world so differently from ourselves! But luckily we have a wonderful tool like the Enneagram to help us navigate this tricky territory!

Melancholy and sadness is the baseline where we are wired. So it's not that we love it- it's more like it's who we are. Similar to how a 7s baseline is lighter and more positive. So when someone says, "hey, change," it feels like the person is attacking our personhood. Because they are criticizing our baseline. The body center is repressed, so moving out of things and into action is hard, too, so that's just another level to making change taking a bit more work and effort. And while we can make changes, I don't think our baseline is going to shift very much. Just having gratitude, and communicating to our partner that, "Hey, I feel fine. I'm not actually unhappy. this is just my baseline. things are actually ok" is helpful in my relationships.
