I really like this viola player. He has such a full, rich, buoyant sound-- and he plays that opening Largo in a completely different way than anyone else-- the way he separates the dotted rhythms and makes it more assertive. Great playing-- what viola playing should be.

Several contemporary musicians - including Telemann's pupil Johann Christoph Graupner, Johann Georg Pisendel and Johann David Heinichen - took up elements of Telemann's work. Other composers like Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel soon emulated them. Other students from the Hamburg period, to whom Telemann did not convey the instrumental craft, but "stylistics", are Jacob Wilhelm Lustig, Johann Hövet, Christoph Nichelmann, Jacob Schuback, Johann Christoph Schmügel, Caspar Daniel Krohn and Georg Michael Telemann. Telemann's Polish influences inspired Carl Heinrich Graun to imitate him; Johann Friedrich Agricola learned from Telemann's works at a young age. Johann Friedrich Fasch, Johann Joachim Quantz and Johann Bernhard Bach also expressly mentioned Telemann as a model for some of their works. From handwritten notes that he added to Telemann's manuscripts, it is clear that Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach studied and performed a number of his compositions. Telemann's lively friendship with Handel was expressed not only in the fact that Telemann performed several of Handel's stage works in Hamburg - some with his own interludes - but also in the fact that in later years Handel often used themes from Telemann in his own compositions. Johann Sebastian Bach made copies of several of Telemann's cantatas and introduced his son Wilhelm Friedemann to his music in a piano booklet written especially for him. The music book prepared by Leopold Mozart for Wolfgang Amadeus contains eleven minuets and a piano fantasy by Telemann. The piano style of both Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is sometimes reminiscent of Telemann's way of writing.

To all that say this sounds horrible; Obviously you do not know what true music sounds like. This is a wonderful piece. And to all you critics who are saying "this has too much vibrato for a baroque piece," or "this is horrible>" You obviously do not have a taste for music. I love this piece.

I suppose I'm a bit of a music philistine, but I can't begin to fathom the impulses behind the incessant nitpicking of people who present themselves a professional musicians on these videos. This is too slow, not enough vibrato here, etc. Is this what formal training does to the musical sense? If so, I'm glad I never learned and can enjoy, in my utter ignorance, everything I hear in this and countless other pieces I've seen torn apart by these people.

It's like anything else people study I think, you learn to do it a certain way and sometimes you think that's the only right way. Shame that it happens with music but even though I have a degree in music, I don't think I've gotten there yet, maybe because I studied composition more than performance. Cheers.

+Joe Hargrave This is a old comment, but I still feel inclined to give my two cents. To put it frankly, if you have a good exposure to high quality music, then you are going to be less accepting of poorer music. While it's true that some people are overly critical of aspects that are up to interpretation, I feel that this particular recording is most definitely sub-par, and as you can see others feel this way as well.
@plj103
@plj103 8 жыл бұрын
Vibrato can be quite overdone. And often I feel that Bach and Telemann are performed at too fast a tempo. I do however feel that both the soloist, and at times the orchestra were dragging subtly, falling off their own tempo. Still a beautiful performance, enjoyable. The balance and nuances I think may have been obscured by subpar recording quality.
@dhollandpiano
@dhollandpiano 7 жыл бұрын
You are a good example of a true philistine. It is the intention of the polyphonic style that you actually hear all the pitches and horizontal lines, notice patterns and sequences, and notice how the composer varies them and uses them to lead into key changes. Adding more vibrato and speed will obscure all these essential elements of the style. The emotional response comes through the composer's skill in leading your expectations to places where he will betray them in pleasing ways. Pay attention to the timing of cadences. There are an essential part of the form and your enjoyment of it. Relax and allow yourself to be immersed in the music instead of your expectations. You must sing along silently to yourself.

Ya know, as I go through these videos, I have to say I just found some of that. I was literally more like, "What on earth are you guys friggin talking about!? It sounds great!" Nit picky I'm finding it! You spend all these years, perfecting and working on your skill, show off a little and your crusin' to be bombarded by smart asses on the internetz with their nose stuck in the air, "too much 'je suis artiste', distracting!" "this is being played like a concerto and it's not a concerto it's a rehrehrehreh" And I hear these words being spoken in my head literally in a whiney ass high pitched voice.

How is it possible that Telemann the composer of the most exquisite and creative works could write this absolutly horrible concerto?

Dear Alexandra. I did not want to put anybody down, only defend my favorite composer. I actually love the viola and i hope you will be very happy whith your instrument. My piont is that this concerto differs very much from Telemanns other compositions and in my opinion does not do him justice.

You should take your meds. Going through life bipolar must be a real burden. This viola does not have a good sound , an neither do you. Have you also considered electroshock therapy?
