At first Zack *stayed true to his duty* but not knowing the true damage they were causing and even the Wutai generals tried to hire Zack into helping them stop Shinra from damaging innocent countries. Zack became *a hero in the end* and only caring for those he held true to his heart, like Aerith and his own bro, Cloud. If you don't know why he really died, here's why: After a visit to Cloud's hometown and Sephiroth ravages the village in rage after discovering what he really is, Zack went on to fight Sephiroth but lost and Cloud fought too but was also heavily injured but won the fight, throwing Sephiroth down whatever that reactor was. Later on some doctor, I forgot his name, made up a lie saying Zack went all rage and destroyed the village and betrayed and killed his teammates. Soon after that, he took them as test subjects and exposed them to very high amounts of Jenova cells and a lethal dosage of Mako energy that Cloud's body consumed. Zack soon breaks out, carrying Cloud along with him after some years of being experimented on. Nobody to turn to, Zack had to run and Cissnei and Tseng had to hunt him down and kill him as their orders had stated. While Zack is running, he get stopped by Cissnei and easily disarms her. She tries to convince Zack saying how she can just tell the Turks to stop the hunt, but Zack refuses. His story ends with a tragic fate as the Shinra army had found him and his only way is to pay a hefty price for freedom, his life.

GUTS 141 what if in part 2 of the remake things from alternate timelines intersect and instead of aerith dying again, this new timelines zack steps in because as we see with the one boss that we fight that spits out future versions of our hero’s that we have to fight. Zack kinda gives me Arthur vibes, this game is a prequel to the original story of FF7 and yet both Arthur and Zack saved the protagonist so that they can become the characters they became in their beloved orignal games, Zack's death means just as much as Arthur's in games sense
