Enter the Dark Forest - Starsector 0.95.1a Nexerelin Modded Run - Roider Union - Let's Play #1

It's time for more Starsector, this time in the most difficult run I've done so far. As a lone pilot for the Roider Union, life is already dangerous as is. But add in a whole Derelict Empire along with a whole host of horrors modded into the game, and this 0.95.1a run is going to be its own nightmarish scenario. We're starting with Frigates only and going to be following some house rules, but there may be one more bit of news I was not expecting: The Dark Forest is inside the house. Don't get too attached to anything, because this is going to be THAT kind of fun series.
Also, you're welcome to comment with requests for officer or ship names as well as submissions for The Actual Wheel of Doom. Thanks again for you all's support for the channel, and I look forward to bringing even more content in the months ahead.
Starsector is a very moddable game, and if you are familiar with the game there are always mods available to take your game further. People don't seem to understand the bug that occurred. It's specific to mod-added factions that add hidden markets. Roider Union is one of those. They consider you hostile if you are caught without your transponder twice, no matter what your relation with the faction is. you can go from 100 relations to fully hostile with a couple misclicks.

remove one rule. you can remove one rule from your list and if you spin that rule again you put it back on your list.

I hope that when a faction decides to engage you and is deemed a hostile action gets fixed prior to the 1.0 release! Also, I would like to be an officer whenever the chance arises... if I materialize, I'd like to be paper plate face guy.

I don't know, but dozens of hundreds of hours playing left me with no such experience at all. It is always the players action and AI reaction, like in this video, he broke the law, he got himself seen while being hostile and they responded as they should. It wasn't the roiders turning hostile, it was he doing it. A faction never ever decides to engage you against it's relation standing, not even pirates or lud. Pirate fleets and scavenger fleets do behave opportunistically and they do decide to pick on you, the fight with them is again a player choice and it does involve faction relations once you start destroying them, no matter who started it or why, you can always chose to not be hostile and it will have impact, it is your choice to shoot back, doing so to have impact isn't a bug. Same goes for tech mining, getting into the economy, etc. All Ai aggression is player action based, never seen it fail in the last 5-6 years. The point is, there is no bug = there is no fix. Your perception is failing, when you don't realize your doing is at play, saying and thinking otherwise and believing it. Cheers!

@@9kArdos3 the bug is that the AI dont let him turn on the transponder (normaly they will just ask you to turn on and give a small -rep penalty) and just destroy you, that is the bug. (also, i never had this bug before, they aways let me turn on the transp, maybe its a bug with the modded faction?)

@@ShadowWolf231 it's a problem with hidden markets that want your transponder to be on, they can be a little buggy, roider union adds both hidden independent and roider bases

@@ShadowWolf231 In my personal experience, that's not a bug, it's intended behavior: if you are caught breaking the law multiple times in short succession, such as happened to Asher, then they'll aggro. It's meant to be a warning system so that you have some leeway but can't just infinitely break the law in exchange for rep loss. At some point, just like real law enforcement, they're gonna wizen up to your scheme and actually enforce the law when they realize it's a pattern of behavior rather than an accident or isolated incident. Ofc, that being said, it's somewhat questionable that the punishment for having your transponder off a couple times is the destruction of your fleet. For some factions, that may make sense, but others would probably be willing to settle for a fine or prison sentence or something like that. In general, politics and reputation and crime do kinda feel like they're not quite up to snuff, at least not in vanilla, though given it's not even at full release it's not that surprising nor upsetting.

Wheel of Doom idea: Only allowed to use Black Market trading/No open market trading. I know this might seem like it would be good but it could limit your supplies and fuel for a entire level. Not to mention also possibly giving you suspicion with factions and having them scan you unexpectedly.

22:24 - You had your transponder off and were orbiting a known pirate world. Why wouldn't they assume you to be a pirate? Turning on your transponder would just be letting them know who the pirate is... pretty sure people get shot for piracy in Starsector (or maybe I just shoot all pirates... same thing really). 24:25 - "Hostile Actions" = colluding with pirates... or running without a transponder... or fighting with a patrol. Take your pick really.

Obviously I did a terrible job pleading my case because the officer was just like "I just found you and I know who you are because you turned on your Transponder before, now I'm going to kill you." Like...dude. That's not really a capital offense when there's a battle with hostile pirates going on right outside the window.

Wheel of Actual Doom Idea: Rename 1d4 ships to something ridiculous and unfitting that make them unable to be taken seriously. You are obligated to refer to them by their new names at all times, no matter how stupid it makes you sound. Just like in the last one, name a junker/low tech/techmined/rustbucket heavy cruiser/capital Clear Skies, as I don't think it got enough screen time last run. I think a Roach King/Herakles/Junk/Amalgam/Dragon/Renegade would be a good hull to use, and of course make sure to fit it with as many long ranged artillery weapons as you can.

For the spins: (since it seems almost all of the suggestions are negative/difficulties, I want to give one or more positive possibilities, but also have a few sinister ideas) 1> Choose one spin outcome, and spin again 2> you're able to have double the largest ship type accessible to you at your current level 3> one of your captains deserts you and takes their ship with them 4> fuel tanker explodes, destroy/scuttle one dram and the fuel it was carrying along with it, no matter where you are 5> {limited time?} get out of jail free card (choose to accept or deny the next spin, maybe only a spin in the next x amount of episodes, something along those lines)

I have some wheel of doom spin that would definitely mess up my run if I did it: 1.You can't take supplies from a post battle salvage (anything else that gets you supplies is ok)(don't know about taking a ship the scuttling tho) 2.If you lose any fight you must space crew member equal to 18% of needed crew of all working ships(disengaging doesn't count) 3.If you get caught by a patrol,you must always comply

Added, but you know yours raises a really interesting question. It's easy enough if I have a corrupt nanoforge. But if I have none, does this mean I have to do an IOU or I have to immediately switch gears and "procure" one for the pirates. I like it.

Great video so far. An idea for a spin would be that you would have to sell all of your blueprints to the pirates. What ever you have on you and stored away. The difficulty would range wildly and would be an interesting time.

I can't say for sure if ALL of the mods are balanced, but my goal is always more to have a fun and interesting experience. If that means sometimes I get crushed by Starsector so be it. Also, in terms of locating the mods there's a really nice Mod Index list on the Fractal Softworks mod page. Unless I'm going crazy from sleep deprivation, every single mod I got was from that index or from scouring the forums myself.

Wheel of Dom(ain) idea, ATTENTION THIS IS HEGEMONY COMSEC!, -if you have ai cores (in your cargo bay), roll the type of core with a 6 side dice (if you have multiple types), -then yeet half of that type into hyperspace rounded up -in case you don't have any cores, increase Hegemony relations by 10 and roll again

That's an excellent question with a two part answer: 1) I wanted to feature some different factions than the ones I used in my previous Starsector series and 2) I left on the option to have them populate the world after the start

Happy to have found this series! Had Starsector for a while, but only just got into it (starting vanilla). Sooo good! Interesting tidbit that I didn't find in the comments; there is a book trilogy from Liu Cixin which is an insanely interesting series about a harsh universe with the dark forest problem. The books are (in order) Three Body Problem, The Dark forest, and Deaths End. One of the best sci fi book series in my opinion, so incredibly full of concepts and ideas. Extremely interesting read, and honestly much better in my opinion than classics like The Foundation series from Isaac Asimov. Anyways, looking forward to the series, subbed! :)

Even after your explanation I cannot figure out what your 0|0|0|1 numbers mean under flight restrictions... So at level 5 you are allowed to use... 3 supercapitals... 5 capitals... 7 cruisers and 9 destroyers? But at level 10 you can no longer use.... I am so lost... Either I am very stupid, or this information is very confusing... I'm guessing some combination of both...

It's okay I can understand the confusion. I could have just made a spreadsheet. At level 20 I will be able to use 9 destroyers and I will be able to use 1 Super Capital. The listing for each class of ship is broken down from level to level. So at level 15 when I unlock Capitals, I would be able to use 7 Destroyers, 4 Cruisers, 1 Capital, and 0 Super Capitals. It'll make more sense as the series progresses.

This game should be ported on mobile devices. This would be the best place for it imo. As it is single player game, could pause at any time, and continue at any time without bothering anyone. Also, it would be great to have Multiplayer, like DayZ, Zomboid, etc. small server games. Multiplayer will bring this game to a new level.

Congratulations and welcome to Starsector! There's always a way out, although it looks like you have some serious digging to do. Pretty much any point of hostility in the base game is something that is intentional -- so make sure you aren't saturation bombarding planets or just trying to shoot down other factions with your beacon on. In addition, you can trade with people via the black market if you keep your beacon off. So that's a plus. However, the Diktat and Persean League have plenty of planets, so that's more than enough for trade partners. You can take a comission with one of them or do missions for them to continue to try and build up reputation. As for out of supplies? How far away are you from where you can get them?

@@AsherGames well it turns out I’m neutral with both the factions that don’t want vengeance on me. So no reading on open market. I decided to end the letsplay there, and start a season 2 because I squandered my story points for dumb stuff early instead of hoarding them for build in or colony management, that and I would ant to play with mods, and especially after watching you current play through. Speaking of mods, do you have any suggestions for fun factions? I got HMI and the dinosaur people because of this play through.

That's absolutely one of the most reliable ways to build up with good profit margins. Drugs can be a little more stable if you can find the right ratio, but if you have the capital you can't go wrong with dumping a bunch of weapons on the black market. Morality be damned.

Man this guy wants to add extra challenges and he can't even play the game normally, how does someone have a 60 part playtrough and don't even know to not turn off his transponder and to at least change hull mods on his civilian ships, all should use unstable injectors and expanded cargo and fuel

There is plenty to do and enjoy unmodified, so my suggestion would be to start there. The game has a pretty good tutorial to get you started.

since dude didnt answer you, Nexelerin takes it to the next level. Virtually every mod uses it as a base. It adds quite a few things to vanilla including QoL features, new ships, new equipment. The next thing to look at after you have Nex are faction mods. There is a wide variety, and some are more fleshed out then others. If you dont want new factions, you can get things like the ship & weapons pack, and some packs that add new hull mods. Join the Unofficial discord if you havent already, plenty of people that can steer you in the right direction with mods that work for the latest version of SS.

Just found out that this game exists a few days ago. Thinking of getting it. Support the development and what not. One question that I had at the very beginning of the video is. Is the map like a random generated kind of map?

In the base game, there is a predictable but slightly randomised layout for the civilized "core worlds" in the middle of the map. everything outside of those core worlds is random. In this play through, I opted for a randomized map

I started playing a couple of weeks ago. It's the first game in a very long time that's completely captured my focus and attention. I haven't touched anything else since, just playing vanilla. I just finished the main storyline and I want to keep expanding my colonies for awhile, but I'm definitely looking forward to starting a modded run.
