Esipenko is one player against whom you do not want to play unorthodox openings , even if you are Hikaru or Magnus . Shakriyar once tried this with white against Esipenko . Esipenko took almost a hour to calculate one move and then Shakriyar was struggling for a draw .

I used to think Chess opening theory was great, but as I am improving and getting better, I am more inclined towards "Fischer Random" as more authentic chess than all these classical memorized lines. I don't know why memorization is weighed more than raw logical analyzation? Folks spend a lot of hours in learning "theory" and now they need to justify it.

Hikaru's wife lost to Wesley So's girlfriend, who thanked him as her secret second in the 2023 USCC closing ceremony speech. But Atousa almost beat Carissa Yip! It wasn't a clean victory. Carissa was losing most of the game. Atousa just blundered in the end. Please consider reviewing this game and in particular spreading the rumour that Carissa Yip is dating Wesley So based on Carissa's X header - it's a photo of just Carissa & Wesley (& Leinier & Melik). move 54 for black is an 8-move equality puzzle it's so sharp [Variant "From Position"] [FEN "1Q5k/3r1rn1/p3N3/Pp1p2P1/1q2p3/1B2R2P/5P2/6K1 b"] 1... @@tonylove4800 Esipenko has never played this opening and Hikaru didn't play it for something like 17 years. That's why Hikaru played it--to surprise his opponent. And if Esipenko played so badly and Hikaru "owned" him in the opening, why didn't Hikaru win easily? He is the stronger player by 100 Elo. Also, based on engine eval white was never at any disadvantage in this game.

Hikaru will never be World Championship challenger until he stops playing such nonsense openings. They might get him a lot of wins in bullet chess, but he opens himself up to too much counterattack by serious players in classical time format. Sometimes I think he just plays this stuff because he finds it funny.
