The difference between a Scalper and an Investor is simply when they sell. - If someone sells immediate to short term after acquiring a product they are a scalper. - If someone sells long term they are called an investor.
@chiefchimp27893 күн бұрын
You hit the nail on the head. I've been saying the same thing, as well. It's almost directly a result of the pandemic too. I also think that a general lack of knowledge of Pokemon from these investor bros also shows just how uninterested they are in the hobby other than financially benefitting from it. My main issue with them is they are hoarders within the community, and they are the reason that pre-orders sell out real fast. They buy in massive bulk, and I believe the right thing to do, going forward, is companies that sell Pokemon cards need to set some limits on pre-orders.

yep and you can invest without being a asshole about it by taking all the stock at a store. don't take the pallet or entire shelfs worth at costco etc is so rude
@Chimeratech83 күн бұрын
I don't mind an investor grabbing a booster box or two to keep as an investment. But when investors are buying in large volumes and clearing out shelves like scalpers, it's hard for me to think there's much difference between the two groups. One could say that some of these high volume investors are just scalpers with more patience. Ultimately, both groups are trying to buy low and sell high and often have very little interest in the product themselves beyond their market value.

Unpopular opinion maybe: but Pokemon Card investors are part of the preservation of the hobby. If all anybody did was rip packs, we wouldn’t have near the amount of older packs to then appreciate and open in the future. All those hype streams of a base set box being opened? Pretty good chance that was only possible because someone at some point thought “hey, this might be valuable in the future. I’m going to hold onto it for a while.”
@riverdoge3 күн бұрын
I can agree with that, but having to deal with PC ETBs being sold out in 20 minutes because "investors" bought them all up in seconds is painful. I wish the demand wasn't nearly as high as it currently is.
@lsb_gamer75793 күн бұрын
@@riverdogeI don’t fully agree with that though. You have no way of knowing that ONLY investors bought EVERYTHING. Pokémon TCG is at an all time high in popularity across more groups of people than ever before. The organic demand is crazy right now. Just screaming “scalpers!” Sounds like a lot of copium to me.
@lsb_gamer75793 күн бұрын
And putting investors in quotation marks is also demeaning to people unnecessarily who more than likely also collect and also hold onto sealed product for the future too. People seem to forget that if Pokémon wasn’t popular, YOU wouldn’t want the cards either. If nobody wanted the cards, then guess what? You’d be by yourself looking at cardboard by yourself. This channel wouldn’t exist. Tournaments wouldn’t exist. None of it would exist. To wish for there to be unlimited supply is wishing suicide on the hobby as a whole.
@scalpertcg16373 күн бұрын
Agreed! Thats why sales were WAY down early on in Pokémon cards. Everyone just ripped. You HAVE to have people who care for more than just the cards. Money being involved is good for Pokémon. Normal Pokémon collectors hate it but it will be good for Pokemon. They hate the thing that helps fuel their hobby.
@Chimeratech83 күн бұрын
The problem is that investors are pretty much only selling to other investors. The only people who I see buying vintage packs to rip are people doing it for KZbin or TikTok. Very few collectors are rich enough to be able to rip vintage packs with any sort of regularity, given the cost and risk (pack-weighing, resealed packs etc.).

I feel like people here need to hear this… Scalping is good for the hobby! Investing is good for the hobby! Hobby shops are good for the hobby! Big box retailers are good for the hobby! Tcgplayers are good for the hobby! Collectors are good for the hobby! KZbinrs are good for the hobby! Pack rippers are good for the hobby! Flippers are good for the hobby! And finally… people who celebrate or complain about any of those kinds of people are also good for the hobby.
@erncollects3 күн бұрын
This video resonates! I collect and primarily sell singles, slabs, and seals for my cards business as a hobby. As part of this, I am able to set aside sealed (it's basically long term flipping/investing) with the intention of it going up over time. What I can't stand right now is the content based on FOMO, buy buy buy!, pointing to graphs, blind endorsement of sealed products, etc etc. It's all lazy and just capturing on peoples' naivety, leading to impulse purchasing.
@joshuastabe28503 күн бұрын
I feel like once the hype dies out a little, and the super casual collectors file out of the hobby again, the scalpers who went overboard and have way to much stock will oversaturate the market with trying to sell fast while prices are high and the prices for secondhand will plummet. This is how things like this always go, hype draws in disingenuous people who want a quick buck, and when they ultimately take things to far (overinflating prices beyond reason and selling too quick) it kills the market. I think the one thing everyone forgets with this kinda thing, is to just be patient, it’s hard but things will even out eventually.

Pre-releases are our favourite.
@jims1352 күн бұрын
Danny, there is such a fine line between different aspects of the business. Also, there are so many folks that have moved into the "investing" side, which has both positive and negative impacts. For store owners such as yourself, the interest in the hobby is great. If there was no investors/streamers/collectors, there would be so much less demand for product overall. Prices of individual cards would not be as high as some of them go, which then creates more hype/interest in folks buying more products from LGS stores, on-line businesses, and retail outlets. And honestly, your businesses as well as any other Pokemon stores (online or storefront) is an investment. So anyone who opens a store is really an "investor" in Pokemon Cards. Whether that is singles or sealed, the goal is to buy at wholesale, and sell at MSRP and make money off of the volume/margins. So while store owners may not be buying to "hold', they are still doing in essence what flippers (Which I am not) do, which is buy lower than the market is selling at.. Now, our local LGS is marking prices up a bit, but I honestly don't have a problem with that as they have had to sit on trainer took kits, collection boxes they couldn't move, etc. when the market was slower and they were being forced by Distributors to take product they knew they wouldn't be able to move. It is a very interesting hobby/side-business/past-time for me that I enjoy doing with my kids who are in their early/mid 20's. WE have a blast and making a little extra $$ is fun also.

So, I have thought about this and have had a handful of conversations with friends and fellow Pokemon fans and I have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a Pokemon investor. They're scalpers. They are buying with the sole intent to sell, be it short term to playing the long game. The scalpers knew they were getting a bad rap and a lot of hate in the community and they did the old switcheroo and started to call themselves investors, which doesn't make them sound half bad. The only problem is that it's a lie. When these people have bots scouring the internet and scooping up a ton of product and leaving us *collectors* SOL, it's a gross, hoarding mentality. They do it with other collectibles and hot items. Ever hear of a sneaker "investor"? Neither have I. They're called flippers because they're buying the shoes at MSRP and flipping them for a profit. If they decide to hold a few pairs for 6 months, are they now investors? No, they're still flippers but they're waiting out the market. I'm not even annoyed with these people. I just accept that they exist. The only thing that I find irritating is they don't even like Pokemon.
@bbq1040Күн бұрын
When people who want to go buy a box of whatever on release and can't find it because "investors" have bought it all, there is a problem. Also, normal collectors aren't buying things at 5 times the price in the future to rip, so this idea that investors help people find product later is ludicrous. If investors/scalpers didn't exist then pokemon would just print less. If anything, scalping/investing forces pokemon company to print more than they have to whoch actually drives the price of cards down. Overall it's bad for the hobby because pokemon will print to demand which doesn't rely at all on people buying as an investment.

I think what everybody seems to forget is the sheer amount of "investors" there are and in what quantities they are buying. There is a reason why certain sets are so expensive while shrouded fables is beeing thrown out the window. Investors and flippers make up a SIGNIFICANT amount of demand now and thats bad for consumers because of higher prices and for investors because of the formation of speculative bubbles.

I don't understand why Pokemon doesn't just let people open pre-order as much as they want. Keep ETBs open for like a month, no limit. Then they would know exactly how many to print, give everyone a chance to get what they want, everyone is happy. People can still invest in an open pre-order system. At some point, the supply will drop from people opening product that prices will still go up.
@lsb_gamer75793 күн бұрын
Because the product that you preorder has already been made. TPCI is more than likely already printing the set that will be released halfway through the year 2025. It takes time to develop, print, pack, and ship a set. They can’t do it all in 2 months time. Pokémon didn’t become the most valuable IP in the world by being stupid. They know what they are doing.

Hot take: Investors or scalpers or whatever you want to call them are the only reason cards are worth anything and therefore are the reason it's exciting to get a rare card: because it has value. If there weren't people pumping the price, then every cool card would be a 1$ bulk rare (yes hyperbole but you understand, you're smart dear reader)

Honest question, if those same people that were buying full displays at Costco kept them for 5 years and then sold them for even more profit why is that more ok? Why is that not also seen as bad for the hobby and taking product away from people who want to enjoy the cards now?

@ yes I would be more ok with that but even more ok with 10+ years. That is investing. Also at this point 151 is so new (as is lost and astral sorta) people want to open it now. In 5-10 years it will be older, borderline vintage and then it makes sense to move for more money.
