Only recently the ASI sites mithaawli, padhawli and Bhateshwar have been made made popular and open to public . Thankfully you were safe while travelling alone in that area. Actually Parliament House in Delhi was designed basis the temple at Mithawli by Lutyens.

A huge temple constructed for Lord Shiva a huge Nandhi(now broken) along with Vishnu Namma Ganesa Muruga during 10th century ad but it is not maintained but fortified by Rana kings 19th century..Now this place has been taken by Archeological department and as you said not maintained properly...If maintained it is surely a tourist attraction.
