that umbrella stand used to carry coal for the fireplace - back in the early sixties, when we still had coal stoves, every household would have one of these (be it less fancy ones, lol), but then we switched to gas and now everyone has radiators, so...
@ImForgivenToo3 жыл бұрын
that is what I was thinking too, since it has 2 handles....
@designorganize26083 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. In Britain, they are called coal 'scuttles'. You fill them, keep them beside the fireplace, then when the fire gets low, you pour more coal from the scuttle into the fireplace. Makes a nice umbrella stand though.

@micbarker62563 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was also thinking that old antique umbrella stand looked suspiciously like an old antique coal scuttle 😄
@aanon57163 жыл бұрын
@@micbarker6256 it definitely is a coal scuttle per my british grandmother. the lower handle is the give away. you held the 2 handles to pour out the coal. she still has one very similar that she has on her porch with flowers now. it was used by her grandparents & so on...its odd that business that beth bought it from listed it as an umbrella stand. i would have listed it as an antique coal scuttle that makes a perfect umbrella stand or flower pot, etc...at any rate, its charming as a decor piece. think about all that work & coal dust back then.

Must be one used for a big cook stove which needed quite a bit of coal. The scuttle would nicely pair with the oven. The handles of the stove and the protective bars around the stove, were also often made from copper. In this way the functional parts enhance the design.

Your French house is so cozy and homey and also really bright and airy! I don't know whether you commented on the square footage of the house but it's amazing what you've done with the amount of space in the living areas! I'm sure whenever you entertain, your guests feel right at home and can sit back and relax in this welcoming home with family and friends. And a delicious meal as well!! I'm learning from your skills at planning and preparing for gatherings. We have a large family and frequently have them to our home. We've recently downsized from a pretty large house to our current home which is half the size of the other one! So I'm trying to find ways to create a nice, relaxing space and vibe for our guests when they come for a dinner with us. I'm never as calm as you are right before everyone arrives. I'm usually running, doing last minute things like setting the table or filling the ice bucket. I admire your ability to have it so well planned out!
@emalinel3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I personally wouldn't put the fabric panel. The entryway is so small and you already have all this natural wood and jute and other neutral brown tones to soften the look. I think adding the fabric panel would draw the attention away from all the natural lighting you already have coming from your front entry way and such. Plus the door is statement in itself! It's a wonderful dark color to contrast with the walls and all the furnishings you put up :) If you wanted some other decoration there, I'd suggest some sort of painting or piece you can put above the door to welcome you guys when you come into/leave the house.

The house just keeps getting better and better. I love the entrance. You managed to get a warm and cozy feel without being too cluttered. Perfect! I see what you're saying about covering the electrics. My first thought was to build a box around it that matched the wooden bench and make it large enough to have a shelf or two inside for storage. But...then I thought yes, you're right...a curtain would soften the frame. Lol! Oh my goodness... you must be having a blast seeing everything come together so well. ♥♥♥

@@EntertainingWithBeth I was going to say that it would make me crazy! Imagine coming in out of the rain on a blustery day, opening the door and having the curtain blow around, get wet and stick you while you try to wrestle it out of the way to close the door! And it would cause a heating/cooling problem as the thermostat would always read the temp as warmer. The thermostat would run the a/c too much in summer and not enough in winter, so you’d freeze all the time.

I can see a little gold drapery rod, very simple, over that door with a sheer white drape that you can push off to the side. Of course you would have to put the rod further out from the door width so you could push it back away from the frame, but it would still camouflage those little devices at the side of the door. Loved this video! TFS! Your beautiful entryway stand may also have been a “washstand”, where a big pitcher of water and matching bowl would be in a bedroom to wash up. The umbrella stand may have been used near a fireplace for ashes to be carried out of the house. I could be wrong on all of it, either way they are absolutely perfect how you’ve decorated with the pieces.
@Lucinda_Jackson3 жыл бұрын
I also could be wrong, but I don’t think that piece was a washstand - they usually had a bar for for hanging a washcloth and/or towel. It could have been just a little chest kept in the bedroom, though. I do agree about the “umbrella stand.” It’s an ash bucket. But it’s current use as an umbrella stand is great! If someone wants the same look, I know of a copper one near me that’s up for auction and it’s online at Vatican.com, but the auction ends soon.
