It has already received a tax incentive for season 3. Something Discovery can't claim. Yeoh's spinoff has been postponed, and Stewart's spinoff went from an ongoing series to a limited run, and still has not received funding. Alex Kurtzman has a history of using spinoff announcements to conceal his failing projects.

It's a sad state of affairs that Seth MacFarlane is carrying the legacy of Star Trek into the future. Star Trek Discovery is such an embarrassing disappointment. I'm the biggest fan of Star Trek, but as far as I'm concerned Star Trek is not alive and well anymore.
@chriswilson85847 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm concerned, The Orville is the continuation of Start Trek and Discovery is some Battlestar Gallactica ripoff. Orville has some low brow humour but most importantly has compelling stories which make you take a deep look at your own values... which is what Star Trek is supposed to be about.
@alienrenders7 жыл бұрын
The Battlestar Gallactica reference is interesting. A superior enemy hell bent on annihilating your species. If this was their worst crime, it wouldn't be so bad, but for me, it's that the entire crew sounds like whiny little brats.
@sabrevanson44127 жыл бұрын
I agree. but you can blame CBS for not wanting to give anything to Paramount. Paramount still owns the IP rights to Star Trek. CBS holds the TV broadcasting rights (barely they had to make a show or lose the rest of the rights) But they have to pay royalties for the IP. which is why they changed EVERYTHING visually in the show. as its one less royalty if it looks nothing like it.
@Demiurge137 жыл бұрын
Robert, i call bs on that, it literally looks exactly like the jj abrams movies...
@sabrevanson44127 жыл бұрын
except its not. Costumes are different. weapons are differnt. sounds are different. virtually no alien races are the same. Klingon in name only. Vulcan probably because there would be more rioting if they weren't the same.(mostly) And look it up. Paramount owns the IP of Star Trek. CBS only owns the TV broadcasting rights. They still have to pay Paramount for using the IP, but the amount of IP used dictates the amount they have to pay. Also, because Paramount WANTS the broadcasting rights for tv back, CBS HAD to make a show and use those rights or forefit them.

I agree with Seth about being tired of dytopian shows, like The Expanse (great show) and Kill Joys and Ascension ...
@kawafahra7 жыл бұрын
The Book Series´source material of the Expanse is rather realistic by mindset than dystopian. The Expanse´s exaggerating musical score has much to do with this slightly uncomfortable feeling of endless betrayal around any corner waiting, without them giving us a break of it in between. I really think by now they overuse Horns and deep Bass sounds etc. in that Series, as like, in EVERY.DAMN.SCENE, even the calm ones where actually nothing happens. Starts to annoy me. Its not about action in the first place, so they should stop pretending it.
@valeriacaissa45527 жыл бұрын
I don't find The Expanse to be dystopian per se, it is darker but I still find it very hopefull and it feels really fresh in it's more authentic approach. It is harsh of course but its fascinating how sexuality is handled like, there aren't really issues anymore about who does who or how Earth pretty much resolved the whole issues between poor and rich (not meaning that there aren't other issues at hand). The Expanse future is pretty realistic, which means it's sort of between utopian and dsystopian. The issue is just, that the new Star Trek show itself doesn't look more like The Orville, not that it has to be comedic and truly utopian but it's looking like the Expanse visually, it's just so dark, even in the scenes where lighting should make the room bright it's still dark and everything so far is about war and danger and not about wonder and adventure and of course exploration. I like that shows today are different from the past, that they are often more serious but with SciFi I agree that there is now a lack of less.. "fun" shows and there is also a bunch that are of course 100% dystopian with barely any hope in them. So The Orville is very welcome and I really hope it will be not just Family Guy in space (while I love Family Guy), not just american style fart jokes but a very nice and humorous mix and at the moment it seems to be like that.

@rjonboy76087 жыл бұрын
Valeria Caissa I agree with you that today's Sci fi (not syfy or whatever) should be "grittier" and more realistic, but don't feel the pessimism about the future is necessary. It does no good (imho) to plan for Armageddon (lest we get what we planned for). I would like to see a future based on Bob Marley's "Until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes...everywhere is war". One thing attracts me to Orville, the talk of realistic relations of people of radically different, well everything. Show us that being from different ancestries is easy compared to having different definitions for air. And do it with humor. "Family Guy in space"? No. I think he pretty much done with that. Fart jokes in space? Maybe, but also much more.

I kinda don't want them to do that. I'd rather see him start a new dynasty of Star Trek proportions without having to worry about cannon & characters already established. This way he can bring back all the star trek actors in brand new roles, as similar or as different to the original as he likes/would appeal to the fans. Lets hope this is another Stargate ie different yet similar, but a name in itself that can spawn whatever further series it likes :)

The Orville has turned out to be much more than I expected. I knew that Seth would bring the humor and that he was a huge fan of Star Trek (and other Sci-Fi) but I admit I wasn't sure how he was going to mix that into this series. The latest episode was "Krill" that had repeated silly jokes about car rental companies but a serious, poignant plot about confronting an alien species that doesn't recognize your right to exist. The final scene of this episode certainly echoed the ethical dilemmas faced on the many iterations of Star Trek but most closely Deep Space 9. The show keeps getting better each week as the actors flesh out their characters and we learn more about their universe. I hope that Fox renews The Orville as the series has a lot of potential. Kudos to Seth for making a "Star Trek" series that feels like TOS in many ways.
