When the Buddha was alive, and for many decades after he was not depicted in statues. Siddhartha Gautama didn't like being represented directly and preferred to be shown as a footprint, the wheel of dhamma or an empty throne. Statues showing him came long after his death. I agree though, personal feeling is important, as long as you have respect.

We had Buddhas in the house when I was growing up. Though we are Catholic, my mother liked them and was always picking them up when she saw them at flea markets and antique or thrift type stores. Her father liked the image of Buddha too and considered them good luck....but my mother, referring to the expression on Buddhas face, says that they also make her feel peaceful. So I feel as if the Buddha has always been present in my life, and that may be one of the reasons for my interest in Buddhism. This past Mother's Day, I bought her a beautiful large stone sitting Buddha for her garden that I found at a local garden center. It looks so beautiful with her flowers growing around it. Just found your channel, it's very informative - thanks for sharing!

Thank you for telling people that the statue in Chinese restaurants is not Siddhartha Gautoma!
@jamess81756 жыл бұрын
BroccoliRocks Well, to clarify, if the statue is a fat Buddha or some call it the Smiling Buddha, his actual name is Mettaya Buddha (in Pali) and Maitreya Buddha (in Sanskrit). The meaning of the name is Loving-Kindness. As for Siddhartha Gautama whom you mentioned, his name is Sakyamuni Buddha (in Pali) and Shakyamuni Buddha (in Sanskrit). Sakyamuni Buddha is the current Buddha while Mettaya Buddha is the next successor Buddha in the future.

I am curious..Buddha never travelled to China but It was Hu yen Sung….who came to India and carried buddhism to China….Hi Mindah ..anyway Thnx for beautiful presentation..I find Vaishnism and buddhism similar….the way you are saying ..catches attention…..let me mention..without mind and spirit….any worship becomes ritual than spiritual..so mind has to be engaged always in His service…..cosmic connection…If anyone is seriously engaged in Buddism…I request ..please visit sarnath…where Buddha first gave his preaching to famous five deciples……….one of his deciple was King Asoka Buddha born as prince at Kapilavastu…was so moved by human suffering at tender age…he left palace, beautiful wife, wealth and went to Bodh Gaya (India) for self realization…..where he obtained Siddhi…There one girl from lower level fed him rice pudding….then he came to Sarnath to start preaching meaning of human birth in this world, nonviolence….If one practices and follows ..His/her mind and soul will be enlightened….he will never be able to envy anyone….it gives you absolute mental strength…you will enjoy meditaing more yourself rather enjoying partying ..It makes you very balanced one… WE keep specil place called temple room at home….which is very imp

My ex wife forbidden Buddhist items in my household. But its 30" tall and 24" wide. I will be holding a over night visual and fasting for 3 days with candles and incense. Because of the world situation in 2021 im not able to have it blessed, but a visual is almost the same. It's going to be in my bedroom because im always sick (lung problems) and medicine buddha should be where you heal. Thanks for the great video, im excited.

Until this video I always thought the Buddha statues were portrayed as wearing a headdress of some kind. Is what I am thinking of really very thick curly hair tied in a top knot? What about the Thai Buddha statues with the spike on top. Is that supposed to be part of a helmet or a headdress? Why would the Buddha be portrayed with hair if the Sangha shaved their heads?

I have been looking for a Buddha statue for quite some time now and recently saw 1 online made of raisin. Im not sure which Buddha is that. It is sitting with 1 knee raised and resting its head on his knee.. i was looking at it and it melted my heart. In Nichiren Buddhism, the Gohonzon (mandala) is the object of devotion. A statue of Shakyamuni (something the Buddha would have deplored) is considered base. We study, practice and have faith in Buddhism not Shakyamunism.
@baby-boomer36938 жыл бұрын
Michael Brasch you have been brainwashed to think a piece of paper represents a pathway to enlightenment. I know. I used to think the same years ago until I pulled myself away from priest lies. Shakyamuni Buddha realized the path of enlightenment and nichiren knew this to be the truth. nichiren priests and ikeda perverted the true teachings of the Buddha. I encourage you to study and read the Lotus Sutra and you will know this to be the truth as well.

Shakyamuni didn't want images made of him, yet a statue of someone sitting reminds us to take the time to sit. All become Buddha as as "bodhi" means innate intelligence, which we are. Enlightenment, beholding light within, is realization. Even the Epistles of the New Testament says, "God is light." God just means the highest good. We continue to discover exactly what life is...
