[Entire story]Fukayama-style Iwato Kagura

Fukayama-style Iwato kagura, including the Fukayama kagura which has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Oita Prefecture, is an Ono-style kagura (Shinto dance), and ranks with the Ondake-style and Asakusa-style. It was introduced to Fukayama Hachiman Shrine in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867), and rapidly taken up by the common people after the Meiji period (1868-1912). Centering on Asaji-machi in Bungo-Ono City, it is widely found in the Ono and Naoiri areas. In this film, the performances of the following two associations are recorded: the Fukayama Hachimansha Kaguraza, the preservation organization of Fukayama kagura and also the kagura company of Motomiya, and the Asaji Kagura Preservation Association, which have been formed by volunteers who practiced the kagura by seeking elders support in order to recover the original form of Fukayama-style kagura. This is a valuable recording of 15 kagura numbers, which was the maximum we could presently revive out of 36 numbers.
