Serenity needs to be the next Godsmack song... he wrote the song about RUSH' drummer Neil Peart. Peart lost his daughter in a terrible accident and then his wife a year later. He then wrote a book called The Ghost Rider and after Sully read it it inspired the lyrics to Serenity. Amazingly haunting song and Sullys voice is ridiculously amazing in it. I strongly recommend it.

Most people love the ritualistic/tribal groove being laid down by drummer, Tommy Stewart, as do I, but there is a little nuance in there that many non-drummers miss. During transition periods and as a replacement for the crash, he uses the china cymbal to portray a "hiss" type sound which goes along with the message of the song and video. Very cool little nuance in there using percussive elements to enhance the feel.

My son was a toddler when I discovered Godsmack and "Voodoo" was the first song I heard. I absolutely loved it, but my toddler loved it even more. Any time we were driving in the car, he would ask to hear "Voodoo" and as soon as it ended would say, "Again, Voodoo again!". Something about this song is just so soothing to both of us.

I use to be a stage manager/ Lighting director for a production company. We had a show in my area, just when Sulley and Godsmack were starting out playing clubs and small venues, where they (Godsmack) were an opener. They arrived in their van and loaded their own gear without Sulley, who at the time was drunk and passed out in the van. Their start time came up and the crew, with the band, literally "poured" Sulley onto the stage, but as soon as he had the mic in his hand you would have never known he was out drunk. Thankfully he's now sober.

Elizabeth this analysis was really good as usual. I listen to a lot of different music genres. Metal and hard rock from the mid-60's to present time is my foundational music preference. When Godsmack and many bands that are similar came on to the music scene it didn't resonate with me. I tuned out of nearly all of these bands 99% after just a couple sample of their songs. However you sold me with this particular song, and I will give Godsmack another listen with a much more open ear. I will say that in this song I can hear old and very strong vestiges of Jim Morrison (The Doors) and hints of Glenn Danzig in Sully's vocals on this track. It is a really good song with a serious "earworm" because i was singing it all day. Thank you for your effort and channel.

This video was filmed in/around Salem, in Lexington and a few other locations in Mass. Sully was very involved with Laurie Cabot and the Cabot Witches Using them in the video gave more authenticity. The castle (in Gloucester mass (Hammond Castle) This song was inspired by the movie The Serpent and the Rainbow, which was a supposedly non-fiction story based on Voodoo. There are associations related to drug/heroin use. The term Godsmack is what a deadly heroin overdose is referred to. Though it's been said to refer to Tommy's cold sore. (Doubtful.) The lyrics are also written in a way that could refer to either heroin use or the drug from the movie (which was drank as a potion though) Sully and the rest of the band have long been into drugs and alcohol. But now they Shannon (the drummer) is in recovery due to severe blackouts from alcohol. They now have the SCARS foundation that helps with suicide prevention. They do alot of good. I love the fact they brought manchester (new Hampshire) school chorus in on one of their newer songs. ;) It's a pretty amazing thing! Love your reaction to this. The first 5 times I met Sully, I pretty much had the same reaction. :) Do Serenity Next! Please and Thank you!

So this one time.... I was in college in the late 90's... and I was in a Directing class.... and they made us create a scene for our final projects. I think power in a voice isn't necessarily about how loud or how far one can project their voice, but weather the singer can make someone feel something from what they are singing. Think about controlling someone else's feelings with your voice, to me that's powerful.

I've listened to this song for years, I love it and when I sing along, I often find myself doing the "serpentine swerve" with my head along to the timing of the lyrics and it fits nicely and really punches the mood in.

I have always seen the story as someone who is drawn back over and over to “voodoo” which numbs their mind and “controls” what they do, them following what the “practitioner” says and doing things they would “never do” on their own. I have thought of this as a stand in for faith, drugs, leaders of a group… no clue if that was intended, but it is how it always struck me as.

And now... Godsmack - Keep away! It won't surpass I stand alone or Voodoo, but it will give sight inside of every bullied kid ever. You're welcome. btw... the song(Voodoo) is bout heroin. And also... 20:00 ... I'm not british, I'm not american... yet... I guess this just remind us of primeval state of mind, the magic, the spirits, the ghosts... it's all in the video and we roll with it. I can't explain how much I love this music. It prolongued my addiction to marihuana and psychedelics for some time and I don't feel like it was a bad spent time, cuz there is really spiritual quality to that sound, which I guess is inspiration from as you mentioned Alice in chains or Tool or ect. But this song even though it's about drug addiction, I felt in love with this much, MUCh earlier before I came across drugs, which means, this is in all of us. It's part of spirituality and I don't want to promote anything. Every single person has much more different path from others, but this song to me opens eyes into what we would call spiritual opening. Btw... I love Benin culture, I've loved voodoo even before psychedelics... so much more I appreciate the fact that even though the song itself is about addiction I've never experienced and nothing else, it's still so true to the african religious culture, which really... REALLY influenced me and as a atheist I can tell.. If any religion left real life consuequences on me... it was freaking voodoo. Christianity is second after, but again... this comes from a literally son of a schizhophrenic and possible ''self controling schizophrenic'', so take it with a grain of a salt. Still, I love the music... their most aggresive songs overcome Metallica and their sweetiest songs are on par with Tool... that's achievment.

I saw Godsmack open for Motley Crue when Crue toured their Dr. Feelgood album cover to cover and Godsmack outperformed them 10x over! Just WAY better, especially vocally, and Sully's drum off was really impressive. My favorite thing though was his audience interaction where he explains how to sing, from the gut, not the throat, to rally feel and express what we were singing along with him; just really trying to get the most of it from everyone. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister whose a classically trained tenor is known for that. Known as a screamer, can do this exact same thing and sing beautifully if he chooses to. I could give you dozens of examples, but my favorite video to show his power as a frontman, isn't his singing, but his "voice". His devotion to getting the very last drop of energy out of the crowd. It'd be much less of a vocal analysis and more of a performance analysis. Twisted Sister - It's Only Rock'N'Roll (But I Like It) [Featuring Lemmy and Robo from Motorhead]. Aka: the moment Twisted Sister rose to stardom, many thanks to Lemmy who loved him and TS. Sully reminds me of Dee on stage in this way (but Dee's got way more energy) and Sully, probably the vocals, but I'm a Dee guy through and through. For Dee's vocals (that aren't what everyone knows aside from: "The Price" which in and of itself is a worthy analysis) you can check out "Calling For You" from his band Widowmaker. I've always loved that he can be really power forward, but also light and restrained hearkening back to his early training, but there isn't a better overall frontman than Dee Snider, that's for damn certain!

Too lazy to read through the comments and there's no vocal at all... but just for your own viewing pleasure you should check out their battle of the drums. Sully started out as a tour drummer and is really good. And Shannon Larkin is a beast. It's so cool. He is one of the most talented musicians around. Singing, guitar, drums(including the cool hand drums in this an many other songs), harmonica. Just amazing.

In response to your question about how or why Sully's voice is powerful, he simply had intensity that couldn't be matched by other Metal bands back then. He had an inate ability to sing with immense and intense volume, along with this anger, grit and growl in his voice with immense control. Power also means how he'd with subtle and beautiful tone during the verse in the song "Spiral" and start singing with his signature grit, intense powerful and decibels during the chorus of the song. Just like Papa Het from Metallica, Sully has a crazy range as a natural baritone himself. So there ya go. "Serenity" "One Rainy Day" "The Other Side" are some other songs like "Voodoo" you might like. Take care.

They added the snake sound and I love that they did that for snake deities

Since you asked, this song is about heroin addiction. The "snake bite" is the needle.

Snake bite is actually a reference to heroin injection. “Voodoo” was actually written about addiction.

Snakebit refers to the alcoholic drink. The lyrics are about my cousin and his wifes daughter.

Serenity or spirals, Sully is so underrated as a vocalist.

Godsmack and korn are what got me into being a metal head. It was funny that I have an aunt who is obsessed with u2 but also loves Godsmack, probably because she thinks sully is really hot. Lol

The song has a lot of mentions of rituals of pre-Christianity occult. Including the snake bite and images from within the video such as Medusa. Back then people use them use to answer important questions and these muses would slowly be inoculated with snake venom as well as other medicinal drugs of the time. One of these drugs literally translates to the purple and it's made from a snail. Ritualistic dancing and drumming was coming with these practices as well as sexual rituals. There's a book called The chemical Muse that talks about much of this. These rituals were actually mentioned in the Bible but in the original Greek source text of Mark. The text was slowly changed over the years as new translations of the original text came out and translated between languages. These are also the basis of some of the current pagan practices.
