My Uncle helped design that memorial. He lived in Prescott at the time. Devastated him to the core. This memorial was his proudest.

it saddens me to hear anyone who is not a hotshot firefighter assign blame to the leaders of the men. from what i can read, Marsh was the first to see the flames in proximity to the crew. not only did the wind change direction but it was blowing 50 mph. they could not outrun the fire. Deployment was their only hope. the reason they left the black was because 3 of their escape routes had been compromised. They were not far from the designated safety zone of the farm house. that was their best bet. Had the direction and wind speed not changed they would have made it. this scenario will be picked apart for years and changes will be made. communication was primary in the tragedy. don't assign blame. their families don't deserve your ill informed opinions.

Leadership failed them. No need to make excuses. The fire moved a maximum 1-2 mph . They chose to surrender rather than make a run for it. Leadership had them shelter in an area surrounded by fresh fuel.
@firedawg74953 жыл бұрын
@@Boojyman Your wrong about the speed of the fire. At the time it surrounded them it was traveling at close to 10- 12 miles an hour. This is documented by the Accident briefing. Also the wind had shifted 90 degrees direction They had less then 2 minutes to deploy which included them trying to clear some of the area with chainsaws. (it can even be heard on video them doing this.)
@Boojyman3 жыл бұрын
@@firedawg7495 why did they have 2 mins warning ? Because they were moving into an unburned area with no spotter. They violated many basic wildland rules.

I just hope they went fast. I assume the smoke and the pain from the flames knocked them out fast. Doubt there were any screams. Disturbing reading the autopsy reports

It likely was. the shelters would have failed with the fire on top of them. Once there's a breach, the oxygen and cool air gets sucked out. Interior gets superheated by the fumes outside, flash-boiling all the fluids in their body. Likely would have been a second of the worst headache of their life, confusion, and then nothing.

I missed the point of the title of this video,,,,help me
why didn't granite mountain just run up to those boulders on the side when the fire came instead?
@fallguye60117 жыл бұрын
Greg Fellner That heat was so intense, those boulders cracked and the winds were heavy enough to have 70 foot high flames. Mix in a 2500-3000 degree blaze, they had no chance being surrounded by the blaze. Oxygen supply limited as well.
@kliving26 жыл бұрын
I was just there. The walls in that box canyon are much steeper than they appear in pictures and video. The fire was moving at 10-12 mph. There was no time to escape.
@mikeggg19796 жыл бұрын
Greg Ory It was too late the fire had 2 flaming fronts, 1 basically took away the route behind them and the 2nd flaming front took away the ranch so they had no choice. They had less than 2 mins before the fire reached them. The medic who found them said only 7 were inside their shelters which meant fire overtook them before the rest could even get safe inside.
@GunRecon3 жыл бұрын
@@mikeggg1979 Don't know how true that is. Likely what happened was the shelters were completely destroyed. They're not rated for that kind of heat.

I presume 1:13 is where the ranch was that they were headed from, and at 1:36 is Travis marker, meaning the fire would have been coming from behind you (camera man). I think. I'd have to read the report again. Edit: at 2:05 you show Marsh cross, so it would have been coming from behind you then

I believe that both Eric Marsh and Jesse Steed are to blame with most of it on Steed because he was the Acting Supt., responsible for the safety and welfare of those men. Yes indeed they were secure in the black with pressure from marsh for them to leave. Steed resisted for awhile and finally decided to risk it so the GMHS could reengage. Marsh was the "one up" guy and with all the other Hot Shot Crews. It is documented that he was "Gung ho" and took far too many risks. I think he is about 20% to blame and Steed 80% for the other 18 deaths.The true heroes were the 4-5 first year Rookies that trusted their supervisors to protect them and do things safely. The movie made Marsh look like a hero and he was definitely not.
