Hi Alex! It's been a while since I found your KZbin channel and it has helped me with defining what I really would like to do. I am at the doorstep of the switch to becoming data analyst, and I really believe that on top of the technical skills, it really is the mindset and willingness to learn what it takes to progress in this field. Thank you for the informative videos, and for making me laugh in the middle of the night, listening to your complaints about celery. Try to juice it, filter, and have a shot in the morning. It does you good. ;) Cheers, Katalin

A bit afraid since I jumped from Jr. to Sr. in a job switch, but they understand needing to ramp up the skillsets and they have faith in me. Granted this is going from a 300 person company to an 80 person one, so perhaps role inflation was inevitable. Great AMA!

Hey there, enjoying the content so keep it up! Biggest thing I would add is you have only focused on the technical skills here and not the other aspects that come into data analytics. From a technical standpoint I personally do not think there is much of a difference between Mid level and Senior level, slight improvements yes but the biggest technical difference is between junior and mid level. However from a problem solving there is a big difference. e.g. junior analyst you produce the data which is ask of you, mid level you think more about what they are asking and find ways to add additional value or highlight opportunities you have notices. Senior level you are comfortable going back to a CEO or head of department level figure and asking is this really what you want because half the time they are not asking the question they really want solved. Final thing I would add is you skill of communicating the data, you may be able to produce the most accurate model but if you cannot communicate the findings it will likely be forgotten.

I transitioned to a data analytics role in my company. I'm 9 months into a 1 year rotation through 4 departments. A few things come to mind: 1. Somewhere in that middle to senior level one probably needs to think about getting some statistics skills, maybe even could be the right masters program for this field. 2. I am concerned that a lot of the analytics roles that are so plentiful will be eliminated by the development of machine learning and the more advanced technological development of the programs such as BI and Tableau. The field may end up over the next few years becoming a hybrid of data analytics, data science, data engineering. 4. I think a lot of folks also should consider advancing in a particular domain after they reach mid level analytics/data analysis. Leaders in marketing, sales, risk ecetra all will be folks with these base data skills in the future.

It seams so weird, cuz here in Russia they require you already to have Bachelors or to be in the process of obtaining one. Also you should already know one of the languages Python or R and obligatory SQL ( in advanced queries and most probably some window functions, yet window functionality are not required solid) and other then that they also check in on your statistics knowledge! And it is all for Junior positions, I also had a case study on one round of the interview

Inspired by Alex & few other KZbins, I landed an analyst position last month with SQL, intermediate PBI, and very basic Python knowledge. My team expects me to help them with Python migrating local DB to Azure which I completely have no idea about. My English is not bad but during the team meeting, I mostly remain silent and google the keywords and acronyms they use. I haven't been assigned any complex project yet but I spend almost 4-6 hours outside of my work schedule on learning and revising resources and I am so far until now very passionate about it. But what I am really worried about is the possible burnout. @Alex would you mind sharing your thoughts on it, please?

Great content! As someone who has a Masters degree in Analytics and 4 years of work experience as a Data Analyst in total (including 2 years at the current company), I have now received an offer from another team in my current organization for an opportunity to handle supply chain optimization. The title being offered is Supply Chain Engineer. Should I consider this ? Will this be a good opportunity for my career? As mentioned earlier I have completed 2 years at the company and I also think I should start asking for a promotion to my current team for a Senior Data Analyst. Your thoughts on that ?

Hey, Alex. Have been binging on some of your content for a while now. And largely, it has been quite informative - even the 'A Day in the Life Of' video. For this one, you asserted that an entry-level Data Analyst role might not require R or Python. I have been looking at job-descriptions in Canada for Data Analyst roles for a while now and I have to say - I have not seen any profiles that do not explicitly need Python and R, along with SQL, Tableau/Power BI, and MS Excel. Can you throw some more light on this? One caveat is that most of the roles I have seen are related to finance. Is the inconsistency because of the domain?
@AlexTheAnalyst
@AlexTheAnalyst 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. There are certain domains that do require different skills more often. I would say that finance is one that is heavily math based and so I'm not surprised that you're seeing a lot of R and Python. Other fields like Healthcare, eCommerce, Advertising, and Marketing may not have the same results.

@AlexTheAnalyst

Congratulations! And I would personally start with Tableau. I think it's a bit more user friendly and easier to pick up.

Yes, also, tabelau is used most by major companies. The downside to Power BI is that it is only compatible with windows. I think there's a way to have it work with Mac, but most companies use tableau and python as the two standard programming and visual tool systems :)

I have a BS in Finance and Accounting, my MBA, and one year experience as a financial analyst (only use SAP and Excel, not SQL and Python). I'm trying to get really good at SQL at home and try for a mid-level role. Possible? Hope your day is going well!

SQL is a great database tool. However, the role you will be asked of with an MBA is going to demand far more skills and knowledge of just knowing and understanding SQL if you want to get into data science. Also, be careful, SQL has a very steep learning curve because it requires coding as well. Take your time and really invest in understanding these programming tools and how they would apply to real life scenarios. That's the main key, is to understand what your manager is asking of you ( in terms of data) and how you can not only extract that information and build a data visual to show the results, but also being able to explain it to stake holders in a simple understandable manner. Good luck in your journey. It's a fun field, yet challenging field.

I disagree about degrees. it's only one method of learning and some super smart people get amazingly stressed during exams and just meltdown. Also literal people like me find it very hard to answer questions in exams as they're not clear. So many founders of great IT companies left their degrees.
