MPA -001: Understanding Natural Disasters

This assignment consists of Sections I and II. There are five questions in each
Section. You have to answer a total of five questions in about 400 words each. It is
necessary to attempt at least two questions from each Section. Each question carries
10 marks.
Section -I
1) ‘Disaster management cycle consists of different phases of disaster management'.
Elaborate.
2) Discuss the organizational set-up of disaster management at the Central
level in India.
3) Describe the nature of floods and significance of preparedness and response in flood
disaster mitigation.
4) Examine the system of drought management in India.
5) Write short notes in about 200 words on each of the following:
(a) Cyclone warning and forecasting system.
(b) Hazards and impacts associated with an earthquake.
Section - II
6) Discuss the active methods of avalanche hazard mitigation and management plan.
7) Explain the risk reduction measures associated with landslides in India.
8) Enumerate the different types of hazards that are associated with volcanic eruptions
and suggest techniques for volcanic hazard mitigation.
9) Describe the impacts of sea level rise.
10) Write short notes in about 200 words on each of the following:
(a) Protection from cold waves.
(b) Impact of climate change on agriculture.
