I’ve been playing around with the “watercolor for bears” set for a few weeks now and my absolute favorite is the wet paper brush for the exact reasons you mentioned. It’s changed the way I’ve been painting which has really caused me to tap into a new perspective of painting because of the brushes particular nuances. I hope this can inspire you to just start. Easiest way to tackle environments if you’re used to characters (btw as a teacher I know 100% of artists start from there) is to identify what is the main character in your scene. What’s their story and how can you communicate that story in the painting. The main character can be a house, a tree or even a boulder. It needs the same amount of love and depth as anything else to be interesting. Finding those stories is the best part about concept art and it’s also the most important one 🐻

I’m currently doing a very environment-based project as a sort of “mini-thesis” at my school, so thank you for this super helpful video! I’m currently at the end stages of this project, but I might continue the theme for my main thesis next semester. My biggest problem i’m encountering at the moment is color and light in large environments-getting the atmosphere right, especially as the painting goes farther into the distance, and also dealing with colors in strong lighting scenarios such as sunsets. I’m trying to keep in mind color temperature and color relativity, but it’s still hard to get it just right. Do you have any videos addressing color and light in environments? If not, maybe that could be an interesting topic to touch on in future videos!

I think I’ve done a ton of colour tutorials in the membership but those are more assignment based. I’ll have to look into making some free edited ones if I can find a way to write about them. Usually with bigger projects it’s easier to keep things under control when there’s a clear working palette consisting of light source and main material local colours. The trick is to design yourself a set of building blocks that you can’t mess up. If you’re handing off a concept image to a 3d team those building blocks would be what they’re using anyway. Saturation distribution and material contrast are good places to start but keep it simple. Even in big scenes. Especially in the big scenes.

I think i might have to check out your membership ❤️ Yeah i think one thing i need to work on is the contrast and saturation of local colors, then after that I can work on manipulating and adding on to those to get them into the right lighting and atmosphere. I think for some parts of the project i’m working on i started out too desaturated and low-contrast, especially at the focal point, so it was just a struggle from there. I’ll definitely keep this in mind for future projects! Thank you so much!

I do use Procreate for many other kinds of designing, and just watching you keep one finger ready to call-up the eye dropper changed the entire way I use the app. Amazing how that works.

Thank you that’s so kind of you. I think the kind of prints I choose for my own walls are often ones that don’t necessarily have a lot of details but they have the kind of brush strokes that I like to watch. I’ve had the same bee on my wall for 2 years now and I still like it. I guess there’s something about the abstraction of the surfaces that I find somehow meditative. Feels the same way when I’m painting something like this. It’s a constant back and forth of my head wanting more contrast but the technique is making me let go so that the painting can happen.

My first art course will be on gumroad soon. It covers the basics of painting in procreate, layer structure, composition, palette creation as well as step by step instructions for how to paint rich and detailed skies. There's a section on my gumroad page where you can sign up for updates on new products. There will be a sale at launch but none of my products have sales on any other days. This course has taken so long to make that it will also have only a launch sale and then be at 40e. I'm really proud of this course as it is so densely packed but divided in easy to absorb little capsules. After my full process breakdown I wanted to make something more efficient and this is the result of that 🐻

Landscape painting and background painting are two very different things. I’ve never done backgrounds. It’s definitely a skill I respect, even if it has never been my job. For people wanting to learn scenery, I always try to make this distinction clear first and then urge them to have a story, subject and characters in their work the same way as in any other art. Whether there are people in the piece or not doesn’t make a difference for the composition rules on how to construct the painting.

What are your thoughts on screen protectors that simulate a paper feel, or special pencil tips?

They’re okay for drawing but terrible for painting. Considering you can’t just rip it out when you want to paint I definitely don’t want one of them on my screen. Whatever floats your boat but in my personal experience they’re kinda gross and insanely overpriced for a flap of plastic. I haven’t tried these pencil tips but I might. I’ve just read they fly off easily. Any suggestions?

Hey, quick question about your membership. I want to learn and get into digital art but I don´t know where to begin. Do you have Beginner friendly videos or "courses" on your membership that help beginners?

Digital drawing for beginners is a set of 5 livestreams that were all good exercises for starting out. Beyond that I recommend all of the from beginner to advanced videos there and the recent chaos livestream. The content mentioned here is only beneficial if you do the assignments attached to them. For more advanced lessons trying out the material painting livestreams can be fun to do whenever you’re lacking an idea on what to paint.

Coincidentally at 0:30 I had already been painting for a while and I didn’t know what I wanted either. Sometimes the painting will have better ideas than you do and all it takes is a little bit of humility to recognise the elements that look more interesting than the any idea before it. If there even was any. Here there weren’t any such plans I just started the live lesson and started doing the chunky brush exercise after the talk.

It’s wet paper brush from ”watercolours for bears” set . In that segment the same brush is used to smear the waterfall mists. Using the same brush gives it that same textured look as the rest of the piece.

Have to admit a 10:27 video consisting of 4 commercial interruptions is overkill for a video of this type and length. As useful as this video a may of been I zoned out of anything you were saying and spent my time with the clicker concentrating on when I have to press the skip button. It’s not your fault and you’ve too many subscribers now to pay attention to any comments but I will say I didn’t enjoy this video. Not your fault - just ruined by KZbin.

This year this video has generated 7€ of profit, which after takes is 3rd of one day’s lunch for me. The ads are not placed by me they are automatically placed by KZbin for videos that have monetization turned on. I wish I could but currently it is not possible to make videos without the income from those ads. I understand how that might be really frustrating. Personally I pay for yt premium be a I don't have time to watch any ads ever and I use their music service + I often listen to videos or music with my phone locked. I understand your frustration with the amount of ads I just wanted to point out what the situation is like from the creator side of things. Just to make a single video like this is only possible because of thousands of euros I’ve invested in the hardware and software to reach this level. Many of those costs are subscriptions too. I wish yt was a bit more chill with the ads for non premium users but sadly I have absolutely no say in that process at all.
