The amazing thing about Enya is that writes, performs and produces most of her music. All of the background vocals you hear are her layered dozens of times. There are only three people involved in making her music: Enya, Nicky Ryan (producer) and his wife Roma Ryan (lyricist). Enya never tours, but once a year she performs live in her church on Christmas Eve.

I still remember when/where I heard "Orinoco Flow", the first song I ever heard by her. Pretty much everything she sings/plays (there are some instrumentals) is very soothing and really good. She's one of the few artists who I would buy her albums without having heard anything on it. And yeah, I agree with you about her songs and visualization. "Storms in Africa" is a *great* song to sit back with your eyes closed and listen. I have a whole music video in my mind for that song.

Same here Shane. I remember hearing Orinocco Flow and was floored by its beauty. Since then I've bought every album without hearing anything from them. Her music is so calming and beautiful. Glad you enjoyed this song! Another great song by Enya is “May It Be.” Thats the theme song she wrote for the first Lord Of The Rings Movie and she also wrote Arwen and Aragorn’s theme Also from Lord Of The Rings called Aniron. She got to see the first stages of the Lord Of The Rings being filmed having read the book herself at 16. Her oldest sister Moya sang the theme song for The Last Of The Mohicans “I Will Find You,” and was offered to write a song for Lord Of The Rings But she turned it down. Enya was born and raised in Donegal, Ireland. She lives there still in a castle. How cool is that? Love your music reactions Jay!

Nice, Javon! I didn't expect you to revisit Enya, but I'm happy you did! She's one of my favorite artists. Your instincts are correct: The best way to enjoy her is to just close your eyes, relax, and let it wash over you (I've seen almost none of her videos). She is who I listen to when I'm in an airplane and need to lower my anxiety. Since you've already listened to "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)", the next one I'd listen to is probably "Book of Days" (i.e. "Far And Away"), or perhaps "Storms in Africa", which I also really love. Both are a lot more dramatic than this one (which is great in its own soothing way).

Enya is in a class of female vocalists that are just different -- they bring something else to the game. You already appreciate Kate Bush. I'd say Enya is similarly unique as Kate. Kate's not really my cup of tea, but I appreciate her talent. (I have a hearing loss and her vocal range is the frequency range that sounds the least natural/pleasant to me. Que sera, sera.) But here are a couple you should try out that have the same femine mystique and compelling and charistmatic production and composition, but not quite as ethereal or magical, but I think you'll enjoy them a lot. Sarah McLachlan is kind of amazing because she created this travelling musical festival (like Lollapalooza) of just female artists called Lilith Fair and she really created this renaissance of women in rock and gave a lot of exposure to women like PJ Harvey, Indigo Girls, Susanna Hoffs (lead from Bangles), Erykah Badu, Neneh Cherry, Tegan & Sarah, Lisa Loeb, Suzanne Vega, Tracey Chapman, and DOZENS AND DOZENS of women, and a HUGE part of why rock had such STUNNING female artists in the '90s is because Sarah McLachlan empowered them through her Lilith Fair tour that ran to dozens of cities over three years with over 150 female performers. The rock music and alt music you hear from women today is 100% influenced by what Sarah McLachlan gave the world from 1997-1999 on that tour. Some person stories here and other Enya music channels are told that some of her songs marked theirs childhood for life. Mine as well, heard Enya for the 1st time in 1991, this song actually, I was 8 years old. How can a child be shocked by hearing this? It was true. So marvelous. Well I think a genuine child can really perceive things better than adults, the simplest, purest and natural message, only by melodic nuances and to be honest, understanding through the years what really is music or what and how should be understood is beyound the conservatoire repertoire. Enya and Vangelis understood that, specially Vangelis who had not formal training at all.

when this video premiered, it looked/felt like "a sequel" to her breakout introduction on MTV (when it was an actual music video channel) "Orinoco Flow": the frame-by-frame "moving painting" effect helped that segue into her follow-up album's single debut.. the lush brilliance in her vocal layers is one of the hallmark talents of her permanent co-songwriting/producing husband/wife team: Roma & Nicky Ryan (who live w/her at her vast estate).. their professional technique of music layering, mixing & production have been a trademark asset to Enya's singular vocally recognizable style throughout the decades.. thank you for your reaction!

It takes her 5-7 years on average to make an album - and sometimes even longer. With some breaks for concert tours typically after the release of a previous album. She does all the vocals herself and layers the different pitches (used to be analog, but nowadays they do it all digitally). She cuts no corners and takes no shortcuts No backup singers. No Autotuning crap. Just pure Enya and all her voice. (she also plays a fair few of the instruments too)
