They are not the same character. In his first appearance (Metal Gear on the MSX) Snake was based on Kyle Reese from Terminator, while Big Boss was based on Sean Connery. It wasn't until the second and third games (Metal Gear II and Metal Gear Solid) that Hideo Kojima began slowly adding elements of Plissken to both Solid Snake and Big Boss's design and personality.
