eoapp AQUA is a new web application by EOMAP to calculate, visualise and analyse satellite-based water quality data. The video offers a short introduction into its features, applications and benefits.
Water is recognised by the United Nations as human right. The changing environmental conditions and human impacts on water resources require smart ways to manage the world’s most valuable resource, the fresh and marine water environments.
This calls for an understanding of the history, current and future development of data on water quality and physical properties. Reliable data are still rare in relation to two-digit millions of natural waters larger than a hectare. The ever-increasing fleet of satellites can help bridge this gap via "big data". However, harvesting satellite sensors for actionable information on aquatic environments is more than challenging and was so far restricted to specialist, only.
Now, eoapp AQUA simplifies and speeds up access to key water quality information, thus empowering water managers of many sectors. It is a user-friendly and intuitive web application to calculate, visualise, and analyse satellite-based water quality information “at their fingertips”. Set up in a cloud environment, eoapp AQUA is a novel water quality monitoring solution for users in public authorities, governmental agencies or industry. eoapp AQUA offers an unprecedented wealth of data and a panoptic view of many water bodies. It includes an intuitive data viewer, a long-term analysis tool enabling users to look +40 years back in time, a monitoring feature to identify both the status and recent developments in water bodies, plus an alert function based on individual thresholds.
eoapp AQUA thus simplifies applications highly relevant to human health and sustainability, such as drinking and bathing water monitoring, ecological monitoring duties, infrastructure planning and impact assessment or river management. It provides a massive simplification for water managers to access water quality data, to condense data to business-relevant information and integrate EO-based measurement in their routine operations. eoapp AQUA furthermore provides a new level of user experience (UX), integrating cutting-edge developments in Earth observation, all necessary additional information streams such as (customer) in-situ and modelling data, and engineering expert knowledge for an efficient measurement tool.
