So, Tom Hanks was interviewed about this movie, and they asked him about the ending. He said that it was open to interpretation and the viewer would have to decide for themself what happened. Then they asked him what HIS interpretation was, and he said, "Oh, he went back there and made babies with that woman." 😂😂

It's interesting that the Ranche's logo, the picture on the package and the tailgate of the pickup, are a pair of angel's wings. Is the redheaded woman at the end his salvation from all of this? Or even deeper, did he actually die in the crash and everything we see transpire in the movie was him spending time in purgatory, make his peace, and then being ready to come to the light?

There was a great Fed Ex Super bowl commercial, around the early 2000's..Show's the Fed Ex driver (supposed to be Hanks character, Hair and beard, and all) drive's up to the house with the package..Goes to the door, lady answers, and he tell's her he was stuck on an island for 5 years, and held onto her package because he work's for Fed Ex, and wanted to make sure she got it. She thanks him, he turns to leave, then turns back. Curious, he asks her "BTW, what's in the package?..She takes out a bunch survival items! Satellite phone, GPS locator, fishing rod, water purifier, and some seeds. "Not much. Just some silly stuff", then closes the door..Funny as hell!

Trivia: All of the nighttime scenes on the island were shot during the daytime, and used filters to make it look like night. The only scene on the island actually shot at night was just after Chuck created fire. This movie took a six month hiatus in the middle of production so Tom Hanks could lose weight and look appropriate for the final half of the film. In that time, director Robert Zemeckis made an entire other movie (a horror/thriller) titled What Lies Beneath, starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. He even used the same crew for both movies to ensure they would have steady work, and be available to return when Cast Away resumed production.

The watch, Wilson, and the package are 3 key items of the film The watch with Kelly's picture was what kept him motivated to keep going. Wilson was what kept him sane with it's companionship due to him being isolated on the island by himself. The package gave him hope and a reason to get off the island to deliver it. Those 3 items also can intertwine with each other with each of their symbols of him being on the island and to get off it .

I've had in depth conversations about who I felt the worst for once he returned home. Of course, Chuck survived a nightmare and discovered he's stronger than he ever knew he could be. But his love for Kelly gave him the strength to fight & survive only to return to a married woman & mother. Unbelievable. But Kelly, I cannot imagine being in her position. The love of her life vanished after kinda proposing to her as he was leaving. She never thought he was dead but EVERYONE in her life told her she had to move on. They stopped searching for him and one can spend only so much chartering your own planes for a private search & rescue so she gave in finally & accepted he was gone. She eventually moved on and picked up the pieces with the help of the dentist whom she grew to love... just not the love she had for Chuck. Now she has a family and the love of her life returns "from the dead" still madly in love with her AND looking better than before he left. BUT she has a good husband whom she loves and a young daughter. She can't just leave her life. And Chuck is really a different person now so they may not even have the same bond anymore 😵😬😟😢 Can't imagine. Then it's the new husband. He knew Chuck was a good guy since he was his dentist and all. But he helped Kelly thru the worst time in her life. Helped her heal and made her a mother & now living a good life. Then boom. Then love of her life returns from the dead. How can he ever feel secure in that marriage anymore? He must know her thoughts are always gonna be with Chuck now. He knew she still had all the love for Chuck all along but he was dead so... But now 🤷🏾‍♀️. Just Wow . All 3 are just in a horrible position and I cannot imagine having to experience either role

There was a rumor running around for years after this movie came out saying there was a waterproof, solar powered, satellite cell phone in that package. What was actually in the packages was some home made salsa the woman (Bettina) made for her husband (Dick). There was also a letter to her husband talking about how she knows their life is boring and wants to work things out. With the included the salsa in there she was telling him she sent him a taste of home and to come home to her and wants to bring back the spice in their lives. Also of you pay attention to the archway sign at her house in the beginning of the movie you will see it has "Dick & Bettina" on it. At the end of the movie when Chuck finally delivers the package her husband's name has been torn off the sign.
@JoeXTheXJuggalo1

The title of the film has duel meanings The word "castaway" does mean stranded, isolated, marooned, etc etc. If you look at the title though the word "castaway" is separated into the 2 words "Cast Away". Which means thrown away, cast aside, rejected. So for a majority of the movie he was a castaway on the island but at the near the end after he escaped from the island he felt like he was cast away because everyone had moved on with their lives. Then at the end of the movie after he delivers the package Chuck is literally and metaphorically at a "crossroad" till he meets the woman and she gives him "directions" and he sees symbol on the back of her truck.

I saw this in the theater with my dad when I was 17 or so. A Saturday matinee. My mom stayed home because we knew it wouldn’t be her kind of movie. We basically walked out of the theater and drove home in silence, such was the impact of this film. It was the same exact thing with the Green Mile a year earlier. We were both basically trying to be manly and not to cry and just saying stuff like”that was a helluva movie, wasn’t it?” The mid 90s to mid 2000s was definitely the golden age of Tom Hanks’ career.

The funny and rather ironic part about you calling him crazy, is the fact that what he's doing is one of the most important things that is keeping him sane. He has created himself a companion, someone he could associate and interact with. And that inner voice that we all have, he gave it to Wilson. Having someone to be in that situation with, compared to being alone, is a huge difference. Without Wilson, he would've probably lost it and given up a long time ago. (Granted, he had in fact lost it and given up once before, but fortunately he managed to get thru that) I just got to the part where you finally understand the significance of Wilson's role in this ordeal. Good job man. And is there a better testament to the acting skills of Tom Hanks? How many actors could get you to start bawling over a volleyball?

@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 Жыл бұрын
@@LadyBeyondTheWall No inner voice? Is that even possible? As soon as we reach an age that we become aware, and able to reason, that inner voice is there. Otherwise how would these people be able to solve problems, or reach conclusions? To think, is to have an inner voice. So unless you are an infant, or practically brain dead, you have an inner voice.

The movie ended with the protagonist having faced an ordeal and got back to the world. But was at a crossroads, and looking at a girl that was probably ready for a good man and about to discover she saved a man's life when her world came crashing down. Another amazing reaction to an amazing movie. It really speaks to just how good Tom Hanks is as an actor that he can make you not only care, but cry about a volleyball. That scene always gets me, having to choose between the raft (the thing currently keeping you alive) and Wilson (the thing that kept you alive and sane) is both a no brainer and absolutely heart breaking. Also Robert Zemeckis halted production for an entire year so that Tom Hanks could lose all that weight for the movie.

I laughed so hard when you jumped at the life raft being punctured. The first thing that came to my head was "if you jumped at that I wonder how you react to you farting in the middle of the night when you're asleep". Also the life raft didn't competely deflate because they're designed that the inflated part of the raft is inflated in sections. So in case 1 starts to deflate somehow that the raft will still be able to float due to the other sections are still inflated.

There's something so real about that situation of coming home and seeing your love with someone else and knowing that it needs to stay that way. But I also know that these two people have changed while he was gone. She grieved and hurt and found new hope and life. He found himself clinging to life and scraping for every necessity just to make it another day. That changes a man psychologically. It would be hard to believe they could easily just pick up where they left off. The ending scene is listed on Google Maps too. The intersection of Texas 48 and 1268.

@@meme4013 From someone who tried to reconnect with someone after a long deployment, its hard. Relationships are about growing together. They grew separately. BTW, islands don't just spawn animals from nowhere. For animals to be on that island, they would have to get there somehow. And being that island is a really long way from everywhere else, odds of anything else other than sea life being there, is pretty slim.

The idea of a rhino, a "pissed off orangutan", or even a "pissed off walrus" coming out there and attacking the guy would've been the perfect blooper. XD It IS pretty weird how there was almost no wildlife on that island--save for fish and crabs! But at the same time, this adds to the movie. If we had an animal companion alongside him like a chimp, bird, wild pig, or something, it would lessen the severity of just how lonely he was. Wilson really WAS all he had.

I think if the kids had not been a part of the situation, Kelly would have 100% divorced her husband. And it's a good chance that he knew that too. So that situation pretty much sucked for all parties involved lol. I like to think he went back to the mystery woman's place at the crossroads. He literally just left from there, and had left a package on her door. So he had at least that to work with as far as an opener. Yes, I know they're all fictional characters. But this is just one of those movies.
