Old-school DDR player who can barely read anything faster than 300 BPM here. What's a lane cover? I don't know how y'all do it at 2x+ speed. I've set so many songs on A3 to 0.5x speed just to make them easier to read.

​@@SeppelSquirrel Most modern players play at 400+ minimum and as such look near the bottom of the screen, so when faced with a low bpm section they get overwhelmed by the amount of notes on screen at once . A lane cover obscures the bottom third (or top third if using reverse), as such both lowering the amount of notes on screen at once and forcing the player to look higher up on the screen making reading easier.

It's so much easier for me to read groups of arrows than react to them 1 at a time. I've gotten back into DDR recently and 13 is the highest I can do without my stamina giving out, so maybe it's harder to read groups at higher difficulties? The only song I've considered raising to 1.5x is that slow song by the vocaloid that also sings King. But only for Expert difficulty. I can still mostly read it. But yeah, those "Use RP to save the universe" songs were impossible for me until I turned the scroll down to 0.5x speed.
