In spanish there are not difference between venom and poison. Both are translated as "venenoso". It also could be translated as "tóxico", but in english this is toxic, so... Edit: Actually, poisonous could be translated as "ponzoñoso", but this is a very little used word that is falling into disuse. You can probably find it in a novel being spoken by an old person.

I just noticed that the distinction between poisonous and venomous does not exists in my language. Something VENENOSO (from Latim venenum, same root as English word venom (I wonder is there is some correlation to latin VENA (vein)) is used for both something poisonous AS for something with venon. I suppose it's the same in other romance languages?
@jasonreed75223 жыл бұрын
The fact that so many mammals are venomous makes me wonder if somewhere in our "junk" DNA if we have the genes to make a venom thats just currently off, waiting to be useful. And if we do i wonder what medicine we could make with it, as venoms have unique effects which can be used in small doses. (Ex I remember hearing about binding modified scorpion venom to florescent pigments as a cancer tracer)

I think one of the reasons why the Permian is underrepresented may be the fact prehistoric mammals - which predinosaur synapsids really were, only a little more "basal" - have always been less interesting to general public than dinosaurs. I, for one, tend to imagine theropods or sauropods much more often than Inostrancevias or Lisowicias. Synapsids just hardly feel as alien and bizarre as dinosaurs. Again, it could be just me.

So the difference between venomous and poisones lies in the way the toxin is delivered. Venom: delivered by biting or stinging - example; snakes and scorpions. Poisonous: toxin unloads when the animal is touched or even eaten - example; frogs and toads.

I was not aware that vampire bats were considered venomous. Is it their anti-coagulants that are considered venom, or did they find something new?
@garrettdodgen37713 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that either, but it apparently the anticoagulant does count as a type of venom. I think it is because Venom is just any poison intentionally secreted by an animal. And the coagulant counts as a poison of sorts.

If the basic difference between Venom and poison is the delivery method does that mean that a poison injected with a syringe would technically become a venom?
@Original_Syn3 жыл бұрын
@Gi Gi I have a better example than just putting any old poison in a syringe. Darts, dipped in toxins from the Poison Dart Frog. Since it’d be a animal based poison being injected by a Dart shot from a blowpipe it should technically be reclassified as a venom even though it’s made using poison (unless of course I’m missing something major about the relationship between poisons and venoms).

Therapsids, synapsids and a lot of the Stem-mammals in my opinion, had what we would consider as strictly ‘mammalian’ traits. I, theorize, that rodents, marsupials and monotremes may have more ‘throwback’ traits to the stem-mammals. Whiskers, a fuzzy precursor to fur, some live births and maybe even sweating milk through pseudo scales; there may have been some traits that go back this far, as there are insects, fish and amphibians that have live births and even care for their young.

And lets not forget that they represented some fairly obscure paleozoic fauna before any dinosaurs. @@DiMadHatter Reminds me of an order of creatures a friend of mine did for his Dark Fantasy/Post Apocalyptic rpg which are basically venomous big cats (which .......... two players managed to take one and pet it). The concept is that they have a venomous saliva and when they groom themselves their claws and whiskers (which are basically like cacti spikes) become drenched in it and can deliver it to their prey/aggressor. The best idea he had was to have a species of those things be basically the universe's Shiba in both size, color schemes and temperament, but they are basically the forbidden Shiba as handling them could mean exposing yourself to a pretty potent neurotoxin that can paralyze you if you're not careful or even kill you if you were REALLY not careful. Idk why, but I just love the idea of cats that groom themselves with venomous saliva and even when they don't want to harm you they are still dangerous
