So a while back, like the 1970s I wanna say, they gave everyone this questionnaire about what their families were doing during the Japanese occupation of Korea, during WWII, during the Korean War, whether they had relatives in the South, etc. Then they used this information to divvy people up into 18 classes, and the lowest class they all put into concentration camps in a mountainous region in the middle of the country so they couldn't escape. They're still there; they're still enslaved in mines, barely fed, and many of them die from Vitamin D deficiency because they're almost always in the mines. There's one story from someone who _somehow_ managed to escape, but she recalled one lady who had talked back to a guard or something, so her legs were broken by being run over with a truck. She had to continue working though, so she ended up using a big mining tire as a makeshift wheelchair and rolling down into the mine, pushing herself with a stick. Oh, and one of the things that they do in the mines is announce, nearly constantly, that in the event of a foreign invasion of North Korea, everyone in the camps will be killed. So yeah, the Kims are cartoon villains, with the weird campy '50s propaganda and such. But they're actual fucking villains.

@tron in all seriousness, Reporters Without Borders rate the US at #45 out of 180, with countries like Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Trinidad and Tobago, Namibia all being ranked higher than the US in press freedom. Whats so special about all these countries? They're in locations that are classed as 'developing', and as history has shown, these areas are more susceptible to fascist and military coups, which often lead to press censorship. Hell, the 2nd highest ranked country, Denmark, is literally a monarchy.
