a hollow is a small shady valley, covered by trees. because they are in a valley and have trees surrounding it, they get little sunlight, hence the phrase, dark hollow. Dan is saying that he would rather be in a lonesome dimly lit valley by himself, but with good conscience, than be in a city surrounded by buildings and people (a setting in which the listener could infer is less lonely), with his past lover on his mind.
