I've had one of these since the early 2000s, this and the Nikon F100 are two of the best if not the best modern 35mm film cameras. I also initially considered the eye control a gimmick, and didn't use it, but it actually works extremely well when calibrated, as long as you're looking within the 45 point coverage.

Hi there, came across your review by random happenstance. I'm a former semi-pro shooter, started with the EOS630, over time and late in the DSLR game switched to 5D2-3-4. Currently still own my 5D4, probably the last camera body I will buy at this point in my life. Bought a used EOS3 last year, has the classic old canon film SLR battery killer problem when you leave it in over longer periods of time which oddly my 630 never did have. Most of my active semi-pro "career" was shot with the 630, even when the 5D2 was already on the market. I have no quams with film except nowadays all film is developed and printed digitally so lots of the shortcomings of the digital imaging still apply to film (with the addition of film grain to make matters worse). Also a problem is you have far less control of the finished file/print, one has to be very educated on how the lab functions and work with them closely to get what you want. I still love film, and will continue to promote it's use. Want to learn how to actually take good pictures, start with shooting with film - it's too expensive to mess up! Enough about me...... I have glasses, the ECF does not work worth a darn on me, lots of mixed comments on that system. I have only shot 2 rolls of film with mine so far with a B&W roll currently half way through. I found my example underexposes by roughly 1/2 stop, but consistently I think so it's easy to work around. There's dust on the inside of the focus screen and possibly in the prism, no one will even look at the camera to assess it because it's film - even though the mirror box/prism is no different than a modern DSLR! The body feels strong compared to many of the prosumer models, but lacks that hard-core pro feel of the 1N of the same generation. My dream body was always the 1V, but currently $1000cdn I don't want one that bad as I hardly even use my current 2 film bodies. I actually feel that my EOS630 had far more useful connectivity features than the 3, primarily because I have the technical back E installed on mine. Frankly I love that people show off film bodies with sample shots, which unlike digital have nothing at all to do with the final image quality (no offense). The end result of a film image is dependent on exposure, film and finishing - the body is simply the handler for the film and only contributes to ease of taking the shot. Having said that, there is a certain satisfaction with working with these cameras for sure. Focus speeds in AF SLR is body and lens dependent, the EOS3 does not disappoint here. Good lighting conditions reveal similar focus attributes between my 630 and the 3, however the 3 outfocuses the 630 in lower light and has a larger brighter viewfinder to boot. My 630 is 5.3fps, the 3 is only 4fps - sad considering it was 3 times the cost and 10 years newer, although the 630 was also actually a prosumer body at time of release. Having said that, unlike many I am not a machine-gun shooter so I hardly ever tap into the frame-rate game. 630 definitely does not feel as solid or comfortable as the EOS3, nor do the ELAN or EOS5 which I have also sampled. The 3 is without doubt well situated firmly in between all these other bodies and the 1 series in terms of confidence inspiring. I've abused my 630 plenty, but I think i'd pick up the EOS3 after dropping it with less cringing. The EOS3 Lock/unlock switch is the most ridiculous designs I have ever seen in my life, a classic blunder on Canons part. Most other models have far better design. Lots of complaints of the side custom functions door, I personally don't see what all the fuss is about as I don't feel mine is annoying. Extremely loud shutter actuation, I suppose this is a personal opinion. Not that it sounds bad to me, but not really the type of thing you'd feel comfortable using at weddings and such. I agree with your findings top controls a little silly, however if I had to choose only one change in design I would still choose the lock switch. Cutting down my desire to chat, I'll leave you with this. Do I regret buying the EOS3 last year, not really. Nice camera, slight step up from the EOS630 in many ways. Would I have bought it at time of release to replace my EOS630 with technical back E if I had the money then? If I knew then what I know now, unlikely. Admittedly, these findings are of very limited experience so far with the EOS3, but I'll tell you....I have been through heck and back with my 630 and I still absolutely love it. Mind you, the EOS3 looks modern, the 630 looks....well....ugly as sin! :-)
@pushingfilm2 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah despite some shortcomings it's still a good option! I have no experience witht the 630 but it sounds great. I wouldn't mind trying a 1 series sometime down the track as well.

The new B-Roll and Intro look really professional Hashem - not that the channel lacked this before, but still, credit where credit's due. You've put your lockdown time to good use! My first camera of my own was an EOS film camera, one of the later, cheaper, plastic models and it eventually broke, unfortunately so I didn't have that to go back to when I got back into film after years of digital photography. Still, it was a good starter camera and I made pictures I was really happy with at the time ... and some which actually don't look too bad now.

Thanks! It's definitely nice to have the extra time in that regards. Especially for videos I can make without needed to go out. Ah right! Could be worth picking up another one if you have lenses, I'd also recommend the smaller ones like the elans/500 etc for much less $

@@pushingfilm I do still have EF lenses (and a Canon DSLR) but I've realised that I prefer the form factor of dials and aperture rings compared to the EOS cameras, film or digital, so it isn't something that really appeals. I'm debating Medium Format or a nice lens at the moment, and really can't decide but there's no rush to buy anything, especially at the moment when I can't put it to full use. Having time that would normally be used for other things can be really good for those 'back burner' ideas that otherwise you might not get round to - now there's fewer other things to do.

This was an excellent review of the EOS 3. In addition, your photos are also excellent! I just recently bought an EOS 3 just to try it out. I've shot primarily Canon since the early 90s and started with the EOS A2 (EOS 5 outside of the US), and then moved to the EOS 1vHS. I sold the 1v some years ago to help fund a 5D3 to use alongside my 7D and later 7D2, so my film shooting got pushed to the backburner. I've recently crept back into film, so I thought I'd give the EOS 3 a look and really like it so far. It feels a lot like a nice blend of the A2 and the 1v, and the overall layout is still similar to later DSLRs, and even to my R6 in some ways. Thanks again for a great review and for sharing your photos. I'm looking forward to checking out more of your videos and photos!

Great Video. This camera seems to be a more reasonably priced alternative to the 1N or 1V though of course there are some noteworthy differences. Which metering mode do you use when shooting Slide/Reversal film? Does the evaluative metering work accurately with Slide/Reversal film? How does it handle backlit and other tricky lighting conditions in evaluative metering? I normally shoot in Manual mode with Center-weighted metering. Was just wondering if the evaluative metering was reliable enough to yield consistent results without having to use exposure compensation. Looking forward to your next video. Cheers.

Thank you for the video. I own an EOS 3, had two EOS 5 film cameras and have since about two month a EOS 6D Mark II digital camera. The EOS 3 size is for a big 35mm camera, one you would use with big - fast, long or zoom - lenses almost perfect. It is of course also great with the nifty fifty or the 40mm. @pushingfilm3 жыл бұрын
Hey. I have used my Sigma Art many times on the EOS 3 and it has generally been fine, but sometimes does misfocus. I get minor misfocus issues on digital bodies with the same lens but its a more of an issue on the older bodies like this and my EOS 500. Generally speaking though, it works... and if you have a bright enough scene and are shooting slowly, you can visually confirm the focus. It works better with the the centre point also, as opposed to the accessory AF points.

@@pushingfilm thanks a lot mate! This is great news I will give the EOS 3 a try. The only lens I've had inconsistent focusing on DSLR is the Sigma 150-600mm C. I have the EOS 1v and love it, but that EOS 3 looks tempting. I have a corded shutter release, but can’t seem to get it to work. It will focus, but not fire. Got any thoughts?

Thanks! It's worth it, the spot metering feature lets you take multiple spot readings if you like for extra accuracy. Otherwise, the evaluative mode works well too.

I'm having a weird issue with my eos 3. It's almost like the mirror lock-up is on (it's not - custom function 12 is set to 0) or that a self-timer is on, and that's not the case either. Batteries are new in it as well. Any ideas or places I could go to get some input? Thanks!

I use the eos3, 1N, 300x/v. I think the 1N feels much better in the hand than the 3 and also feels higher quality. The 3 feels a bit plastic...but it's also lighter. Both are great cameras. It should be mentioned, however, that with lenses with stabilization, the power consumption increases enormously. My 300x is still my most used camera...with the 40mm 2.8 pancake it's a wonderful camera for EDC and street photography.

I had an EOS 3 w/power winder years ago and foolishly sold it. I have redeemed myself with a EOS 1 in very good condition and with an EOS 1V HS(PowerBooster) in excellent condition because it has zero cosmetic flaws and the previous owner ran 65 rolls of film through it. The 1V HS rated for 150,000 shutter actuations. That means its good for 4167 rolls of 36 exposure film. Since film roll count of 65 about 1.5% of the shutter life has been used. The EOS 1V is a workhorse so even if you find one with 1/4 of its shutter life remaining it will likely exceed 150000 actuations since my subjects are mostly landscape and nature photography I have yet to use high speed shutter. Now you're wondering why did I buy the 1V HS? The price was too good to pass up. I have big hands and the vertical battery grip is an accessory that I buy for all of my Canon cameras; 10D, 5D and 1V HS. Not that I need all that battery power but the camera feels more secure in my hands with the vertical grip. For a truly inexpensive film camera go with the EOS 7N with the battery grip.

My Canon EOS 7 has fewer AF points, and it is more complicated to access functions as multiple exposure. But it is silent and lighter, I only want to mod it a bit to improve the grip. But still I'd like to check the experience to shooting with a EOS 3, seems faster to use.

Informative review. The film fotograph is coming back world wide. I think it is time that new a analoge EOS camera could/should released. Buil in with all modern metering devices, a higher number of focus fields and eye following of humans and animals. Only the saving media should be film. How about film. Does it become rare in the US as well?

i have had an eos 3 for a while now and its definitely one of the few slept on film cameras left. in my opinion, you could put this against leica setups that cost thousands of dollars and probably get better quality out of the eos 3. of course i get the appeal for leicas, theyre a different type of camera, but there really isnt much else like the eos 3, especially when they can be had for around 300 dollars even in 2023

I prefer using my EOS1, as the extra weight makes it much better balanced set up with larger lenses. I have had the pleasure though of using the EOS3 with the gorgeous Canon 200mm f1.8 L, and that combo was heaven.
