My poor Son has been suffering with EOE and excema since he was 5 yrs old. We got approved for Dupixent finally in 2020. He never wanted to eat textures until the Dupixent starting working. He's non-verbal & Autistic. We thought he didn't want textures cause of his Autism. Long story short after endoscopy (5 so far) he was on Omperazole and the Flovent. Then Dupixent was invented! Thank you Jesus! However after taking it 3 yrs now. It's not working as the past month. He hasn't been wanting to really eat and I smell vomit or acid in his mouth. I was hearing him gag and coughing like somthing stuck. Right now their telling me he can't eat food cause he's non-verbal and possible food impaction. So he's just drinking the Pediasure Peptides that's prescribed to him. We increased Dupixent recently now it's the waiting game... so if it helps. But unfortunately he got it prescribed for excema. And it's not approved for EOE patients under 88 lbs. I'm hearing the trails will be complete for his weight in 2025! Ugh. So praying the max amount of 400 mg Dupixent based on weight will even help.! Ugh this is a confusing, frustrating health problem. I feel so bad for him, and he's smaller for age cause of EOE too. So sorry this was major vent!! ❤🙏❤️

@Mark Cooper, MD aww thank you so much appreciate it! It's so funny I thought he had EOE again, he just had an endoscopy last week. No inflammation, biopsy results came back no signs of EOE either. Lol I guess it's just acid reflux. I swear this kid constantly surprises me. His doc told me kids cough when they have reflux. So happy, to say.. that Dupixent is still working after all! Thank God. 🙏🥰

As an adult, it's scary to have food get stuck and uncomfortably wait/ have to vomit. I can't imagine what a difficult journey that's been for you and your son! I saw your update comment, and that's such a relief. It sounds like Dupixent works very well, hope to be able to try it.

I was diagnosed with EoE almost seven years ago, and while I have mostly good days, there are days that are insufferable in terms of even just trying to swallow my own spit. My insurance wouldn’t cover the prescriptions for inhalers, but one gastroenterologist was a Godsend, and told me to use Flonase in the back of my throat, and to ensure I rinse my mouth after, and neither eat nor drink anything for an hour after. It has definitely helped in my quality of life, though I wonder how often I should use the spray, especially during peak allergy season here on Kauai.

My husband has this. Last week he couldn’t eat or drink anything for just over 3 days, this is the longest time so far. When his oesophagus closes he produces a huge amount of thick sticky mucus which he continually ‘vomits’. The main culprits are bread and meat. He refuses to take any medication and will not call GP or attend A&E when he has an episode. It ruins mealtimes because we never know when it will happen, especially if eating out in a restaurant.

Eventually his won't be able to swallow anything - he needs to go in before he ends up in the ER.
@user-im6fy4qp6m Жыл бұрын
bread and meat might be what gets stuck but might not be whats causing the inflammation to begin with. he needs to go to an allergist. for me, the cause was dairy. milk, butter, cheese. it would build up the reaction and bread was the most common food i had trouble swallowing. it would always get stuck. probably because of its texture and dryness. but it wasnt the cause. try having him elminate the 6 most common allergens for food. dairy, eggs, soy, nuts, wheat, corn.

Same. My husband has had this since he was a teenager. For a while used an inhaler with some sort of medicine that was supposed to help him, but ultimately it gave him sulphite intolerance, which made it even harder for him to find foods he can eat. At this point he has an episode at 90% of meals, it doesn’t even surprise me anymore. Because of that he doesn’t eat adequate amount of calories in the day, his immune system is weak, but he refuses to go to the doctor 🤦🏻♀️
@user-im6fy4qp6m10 ай бұрын
chances are he is eating something on a regular basis which he needs to remove from the diet. he has to find out what the trigger(s) are. it could be chemicals like chlorine in the water. it could be pollen. but for the majority of people statistically its milk and wheat. have him cut out wheat and milk from the diet. that means all cheese, yogurt, ice cream, anything with "whey" in the label. no bread/cookies/soy sauce (yes even soy sauce has wheat) you have to CHECK ALL LABELS when you have this condition!!!@@irinaegorova2964

My symptoms began 30 years ago after a severe bout of Adult Chicken Pox. I also contracted Valley Fever during the same time period. Esophagus inflammation lasted months, but as it remitted swallowing issues were mild. A relapse comes in the form of a seasonal sort of mild upper respiratory, virus-like infection with malaise lasting 3-10 days

Just had my endoscopy & colonoscopy with biopsies last week. I just read my labs and was diagnosed with this and it said i had high eosinophils at 18. I dont understand what that means though. They also said i had gastritis and ive had GERD my whole life (34). Thanks for the educational video!
@lavender98449 ай бұрын
So, the eosiniphil number is essentially the count that they found on the biopsy out of every 10,000 cells in the tissues taken. The maximum for a healthy person is 2, maybe 3 during an allergic reaction. It’s definitely an indicator of EOE when in the esophagus, but I don’t know much about what it means for the colon.

@user-im6fy4qp6m Жыл бұрын
i think the texture of certain foods gets stuck but its not necessarily the trigger causing the inflmammation to begin with. try seeing an allergist, they will test you for food allergies and recomend something like an elimination diet to see if your propblems go away when you cut out certain foods.

Rice got me too! Had chicken and rice soup and had an EOE spasming episode that lasted about an hour. I was at my college campus and mortified. Couldn’t even drink water, it would re-trigger the sensation! Thankfully prescribed a PPI that has been a life saver.

I got diagnosed with EOE in 2021. I used to workout very regularly and heavy, but in the last years I continue to get cold symptoms the evening or next day after a workout. It makes my life really hard, as I always get sick after exercise. My suspicion is that acid / pepsines get up into my nasal system and cause some kind of throat infection. I also have ear pain when drinking carbonated beverages. Could that be possible?
@MarkCooperMD Жыл бұрын
While you may have some reflux into the nasal passages it may simply cause chemical irritation, not an infection. I’d try a saline rinse (make sure to use distilled water).
@theshepard227 ай бұрын
I'm thinking that I might have this. I had a really hard time swallowing some triscuts the other day, getting inner chest pain regularly through the day more and more. It also felt like I was punched in the nose (both sides for about 2 days). Im really not sure if thats related. Stool is not as consistent as it used to be, and is fairly loose lately. Ive gained about 20 pounds in the last year and that is unheard of for me. My wait has largely also been the same. Im in my mid thirties now. Partner has hsv so im wondering if i acquired it and its a version of that in my esophagus?

Are these “symptoms” very suspicious of this? very gradually get a lump in the throat feeling with a bit of tightness there come on and linger for a couple hours after I eat something then usually stops, but then will come back on without anything some other time, doesn’t affect my breathing at all though, sometimes the tightness discomfort it makes it harder to sleep though when it happening at night

I 100% have this condition. I've also had eczema and hives for the last 15 or so years, for that I've stopped all the heavy steroid creams and just now resort to ice. And for the EOE I'm taking 20 mg Prilosec twice a day morning and night. I finally have insurance but if I to go to an allergist is there any chance to get on Dupixent? Or do they put you through a song and dance and make you wait several years before they prescribe it?
@Vesnich120 Жыл бұрын
If my sons counts were 24 and 35 (don't know what areas of esophagus or what this really means), but his esophagus and stomach look normal on endoscopy, what is the criteria for definitive diagnosis of EoE? His GI doc wants him on 40mg of omeprazole for 3 months and repeat endo after. Could this just be GERD or stress related? He's had a really stressfull few months. We are testing for food allergies next week.

What are your thoughts on dupixent? My doctor said he wants me to start using it. But im hesitant because I've heard other people talk about bad side effects from it.
@MarkCooperMD Жыл бұрын
I think the side effects have to be weighed against the potential benefit. Overall the side effects seem minimal compared to the complications of uncontrolled disease.
@CodeMonkeyCharlie6 ай бұрын
Our son started rejecting a bottle as soon as he learned that he could--about 3 months. Eventually it led to having a G-tube placed and for 2 years he was getting the vast majority of his calories from feeds, which contributed to him falling behind developmentally (hunger and enjoyment of food are pretty good communication motivators). We finally found out that he has EOE recently. He does eat on his own now (varies a lot day to day), but not enough to thrive and gain weight as quickly as he needs to. Since learning of the biopsy results, we are trying to remove dairy entirely from his diet (unfortunate since cheese was one of his favorites, and probably the most calorie dense solid food he ate). Anyone with experience, any tips on handling this with a toddler that is unable to communicate well?
@MarkCooperMD6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Hopefully you get some insights from others going through this. For children I would seriously consider dupixent with a pediatric GI. It’s difficult to get toddlers to eat. Being able to target the underlying problem could allow more leeway on what to eat. Which in turn is what your son needs to start to flourish.

So glad to finally have a diagnosis. So many times I’ve stopped eating and just stared off hoping for the pain and sensation to end. Can’t speak during these episodes, so the best I can do is give a thumbs up to reassure those around me I’m alright. The pain is horrible, can’t even swallow saliva, and the choking sensation is terrifying. Diaphragm spasms, neck aches. What sucks is I’m an athlete, so I need those high proteins and sometimes run into a trigger food! Finally said enough when I had an episode so bad I actually stopped breathing. It was nothing more than chicken broth, and just a spoonful…. Thankfully I had an endoscopy and I believe my eosinophils were around… 26? I think? High. My esophagus was constantly inflammed, to the point where a swallow study pill couldn’t pass by without pain. Anyway I was prescribed a PPI and that has helped so so much! Life is back to normal - in fact, it’s better than what used to be normal ☺️

(As well as making a list of what allergens I MUST avoid and which ones I should eat in moderation. Elimination diet kinda works for me, and allergen tests didn’t help due to, and I quote my immunologist “The tissues in the skin respond to allergens differently than what may trigger the tissues in your throat”. Really is a Trial and Error process that takes patience and kindness with yourself. I’ve been there folks, we’re in this together - you’re not alone ❤)

I feel you. I'm (was?) an athlete too but the fatigue caused by my flares is making it more and more difficult to train in a healthy way. Also my episodes seem to be triggered by intense workouts like races or long runs. I'm an ultrarunner. Ever since I have this symptoms I always get a flare of symptoms the day after a race or a long run. Do you recognize this as a fellow athlete? I recognize the symptoms you discribe, spasm like sensations above my stomach and in my chest, my throath cramping and making noises, refered pain to the upper back and eventually my diapragm will spasm. Also a lot of hicupping and painfull burping. It's horrible and wrecking my sleep.

Yes they can. Although once you get to the stomach and beyond it is normal to have some of them present. But large numbers, especially when eosinophils are by far the predominant immune cell hanging out, suggests disease.

This is possibly a trigger but it seems more likely due to meat being tougher and more susceptible to get caught in a stricture.
