I don't think they switched sides from The8 to Kazuha because they thought he wouldn't win, I think it's because they were embarrassed at how competitive/stubborn he was being, wanting to compete until the end. The8 loves challenging himself and it probably wasn't any disrespect to Kazuha but his pride made him try.
