That's a great start. I would suggest leaving the bushes etc to see for definite what they are. Take it one step at a time and enjoy it. It's not a race, they take time. As mentioned already get yourself some compost bins going, wooden pallets work. Look forward to your journey.

Thank you so much! That first day was such hard work but we came back so happy! We had such a good time! It was also the start of the channel which Grinch and I never thought would work out! When Fluffy insisted on filming it and starting a channel we just went along to give him something to focus on the garden, we never knew we were going to enjoy the channel so much! 😘💕🌸

Good luck with your new plot. You could sow some Aquadulce broad beans now for an early harvest next year. Start making a compost box with old pallets, no need for all the plastic bags then. Looks like you have blackcurrants. That's great. Scrape the bark and smell the stem, strong aroma. Suggest you don't dig up trees until you know what they are. Greetings from Conwy, North Wales.

Dont try to do too much at once! You can win by doing little and often. Do not compost the tall brown weeds, they are Docks that are in seed, you need to dig out their roots or they will re-grow. When I started my plot I burnt all the weeds that I removed and spread the ash on the plot as fertilizer. Charles Dowding that you gave the link to is the no dig guru and he has lots of good advice. The bushes look like Raspberries and the bush to the right looks like a currant. Rub the leaf of the currant, if it smells of blackcurrant, then its a blackcurrant. You have the right approach of covering the ground to kill the weeds and work it at a later date. If you like broad beans then you can sow Aguadulce broad beans now for a harvest early June. You can also plant over wintering onion sets and garlic now. Good luck

If you can find free bricks or stones. You can place then on membrane edges and cardboard edges for more defences. Those pesty mice love hiding underneath for warmth.And keep the clippings like most said for compost.Looks great! Subscribed from USA i love looking at Allotment videos. Lol

A tip, tea tree essential oil works great for combating stinging nettle stings. If you apply as soon as your stung, it greatly reduces irritation, sometimes to nothing g at all.

You could put pallet collars or make small beds on top of the black plastic or cardboard fill with compost and grow straight away ,would work on cardboard better,on the weed membrane I woul cut a square out the size of you pallet collar,take out the membrane and replace with cardboard then fill with compost all over the long strip ,keeps you weeds at bay inside and outside of youre beds plus let’s youre fruit and veg to root into the ground

@andrewhead6267

You can tell currants apart from raspberries. For one raspberry canes will have fine thorns on them, and r blackcurrants will be woodier from clumping shrub like growth, and the leaves will be quite distinctive smell once you crush them. I wouldn’t compost all those dock seed heads, and while the membrane will kill off meadow grass, it won’t kill the roots of docks and couch grass, so expect to do some digging out of those!

Besides making compost piles, you can bury or compost the wood as well. Maybe a longer term compost pile or bury the roots and wood material once it has dried enough to know it is dead. Or you can rot it in water, then bury it.

A great start made, will you be going with a no dig method? If so, it will save you a huge amount of work at the expense of needing a lot more compost to start with.

Hi thanks for your comment! We will try a few beds as no dig to experiment to see the difference, this will give us a good indication as to what works best for us.

Check out Charles Dowding’s videos if you want to find out more about no-dig. I have tried both dig and no-dig. My first allotment I dug over every year because that’s what the guys who’d been growing there for decades told me was necessary. I could never keep on top of the weeds and eventually I had to give up the allotment. A few years later, I tried no-dig in my back garden and it was such a success that when I got another allotment last spring I carried on with no-dig there too. I’ve had a very productive first season and my allotment looks so tidy that I get complements from other plotholders almost every time I am there. I’ve heard people say they can’t do no-dig because it requires too much compost but that isn’t true - you just need to add one inch of compost a year on your beds.

Hi NEW Subbie here, love when people find their way to get a vegie garden goin. How exciting for you and get ready for lots of challenges ahead as well. I am a crafter BUT also an avid Gardner. I love creating NO dig gardens and you will have to keep your kitchen scraps and bring them along each time and bury them straight along ways your plot. You'll have an abundance of worms then.....look firward in joining your journey. I do have a couple of videos on my gardens if you want to take a peek......cheers from Australia

Hello from Canada. How big is your allotment and can you explain how that works? I live in a rural area, and we have acres of land. Fields and wooded areas. Wishing you and yours good luck.

I wish you well with plot number 9. Fabric has a place on the allotment for weed suppression, but unfortunately it won’t replace the hard graft required to bring your plot back to life. By that I mean using a garden fork to dig deep and get rid of every strand of couch grass root, and then dig in organic matter to feed the soil which in turn feeds your plants. Couch grass is extremely prolific and not killed off by laying fabric over it. The no dig method (a la Charles Dowding) is the only other successful method which is les work intensive, but unfortunately impractical unless you have unlimited amounts of composted waste to hand. Good luck and try to remember - hard work really does pay off. 👍
