Ep. 104 MOSAIC BACKGROUND FOR THE LEMON QUEEN, Millie's Mosaic Eyes, Starting a Geometric Mosaic!
I start in on the mosaic background of the Lemon Queen Sunflower. Using a teal blue, an irridized light blue and baby blue stained glass, I begin by laying in a line around the sunflower and leaf, adhering it with Weldbond.
Then I work on the Mosaic pet portrait of Millie, starting with the trickiest part, the eyes. I make several design decisions before I start - the pupils will be the same and the highlight in the eye with be simplfied. Millie's eyes are a light brown color with a dark brown rim. I very carefully select a glass for the white of her eye that matches the photo reference. I then finish the nose and make adjustments off camera to the left eye. I'm using Weldbond for this project also.
Next, I start on a Geometric Mosaic using mirror cut into tiny squares and rectangles. This will be a demo for a class I am teaching, so I want to be a step or two ahead of the students so I can show them how to do various techniques. Again, Weldbond adhesive is used.
I finally get back to the Lemon Queen Sunflower mosaic and finish outlining the flower with background glass. Then the background begins to fill in on the left. I have to stop and sweep up the shards because the mess is out of control and is becoming dangerous!
BONUS: I drop into ATL Glassworks, Georgia's only stained glass storefront. The owner, Day Kennedy, gives a quick demo on how to cut an inside curve out of stained glass with a scoring tool and grozing pliers! She makes it look easy!
Back home I finish laying in the background glass for the Lemon Queen Sunflower mosaic, showing how I solve a couple tricky spots! YAY!
