Life in a Nutshell

Күн бұрын

There’s a flood in the boat and we don’t know where the water is coming from! Wendy starts bailing.
The Go Pro gets a bit of time out and about. Magnus does a little snorkel just offshore and checks out an old wreck in the shallow waters.
Magnus continues the task of fixing the Jabsco raw water pump. He replaced the impeller, and makes sure everything is tickety boo.
And, of course, other boat jobs!
Thanks for watching and following along with our adventure.

Mr. FixIt strikes again! Magnus is a very talented fellow and quite comfortable around his tool bench! Actually, when you own an RV, boat, airplane, etc., having a working knowledge of the mechanicals is a must! When you out there in the middle of nowhere, you just can't call up a serviceman to come fix it. My late Dad used to say ' without bailing wire, chewing gum and Duct tape, his stuff would just fall apart. Pity anyone trying to fix properly anything that he has "repaired"! He would really have enjoyed watching Magnus work indeed!

Dear Nutshell I’m sorry if my comments seem harsh that was not my intention. I appreciate your videos and trying to help people with repairs to their vessels. To often people who are making videos think they are teaching people how to make repairs when in fact they are missing vital steps in the repair process. There is a company I used when I had my boatyard / Marina who specializes in marine pumps. Their name is Depco they are out of FLA. they carry complete pumps and parts for all pumps. They can also help people in need of information about their pumps. Please don’t stop making videos. I came upon your site because I was interested in the sailing aspects of the HC 43. Is it possible you can enlighten your audience on this ? With the now clean bottom what is your average hull speed both under sail and under power. How much HP is your engine. If you where to repower could the boat use more power. I see you don’t have a folding propeller? Does your Transmission get hot because of the constant propeller rotation ? Have you considered a shaft break ? If you where to consider a folding prop would you look at a Max prop and why ? The many I have installed over the years it is a work of art. When you painted the bottom what was the condition, did you see any blisters ?

We average about 5knots under sail and we do about 4.5 motoring at 1500 rpm. She is 65hp which is more than enough for our slow pace. I keep checking the gearbox and its always cool. I have considered a shaft break but its down the list a bit. We are keeping the fixed prop. There are small blisters on the topsides and none below so we are pretty happy.

I recall your early remarks regarding the previous owner having ten of everything in stock. Then in this Vlog Wendy saying "how many do you need" then you saying "one" and Wendy asking how many you need to which you replied "ten", made me think of The Count on Sesame Street.

Since you asked, an easy way of inserting a Jabsco impeller is to compress the vanes with a cable tie which you snip off when you have got it started. Thanks for all the tips Magnus, I have just found your channel and catching up from Panama. I hope you have made it out of Great Sandy Straits, I have hit the bottom pretty close to where you got stuck.

A while back I watched a video where the guy used a ziptie/cabletie around the impeller just enough to insert into the pump. As he pushed the impellor into position he moved the tie up until it was seated. The impellor blade did not con in contact with any sharp corners.

I had some great storage boxes for power tools that had an O ring type seal and clap down lid closer. No more damp or wet tools. Bought them at Southampton boat show. Also float operated bilge pumps, don't buy the auto search ones they keep you awake at night.

Plastic disc is just a thrower, its supposed to keep any leaking saltwater from the lipped seal away from the bearings. 👍🇦🇺

That rubber round disk is called a slinger. It slings the water leaking from a worn seal so the water will not come in contact with the bearings. You should have removed the face off both sides of the bearings and degreased the bearings. Did you check the condition of the cam ? When assembling a pump like yours and you will be using it ASAP you should use Super Lube when installing the impeller. You should use super lube on the cover assembly. If the pump cover plate is worn you should use a flat surface with sand paper to refinish the face or flip it over and use the side with the manufacture’s writing making sure the face is flat. You should not put a worn cover back in place. If any parts are worn it will cut down on capacity of the pump. If you are going to try to teach people on these types of repairs you should do the teaching job complete. I have seen more people who are not professionals try to teach these repairs to people, in teaching the wrong things you will only get people into trouble.

Oh, I commented on your last video but you had probably already moved on but you mentioned here so I figured I would say something again. Heat shrink on wire connection, I notice that on that fantastic wiring job on the engine wiring you used non shrink connectors!

Magnus, is it my imagination or did you put that impellor in in the wrong direction? I always installed them with the teeth leaning away from the direction of travel. You were indicating the other way.

Richard Faunce , nice catch, I thought same. Hope it won’t break any blades when the engine starts and they are forced over in the other direction. Take care,
