Ep. 131 MOSAIC REPAIR, GROUTING THE FUNKY CHUNKY MOSAIC BIRD & STARTING 3 MOSAIC SUNFLOWERS!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio.
Hobby bases aren't made to support the weight of mosaic, and here is what can happen over time. The tree is all weebly wobbly and it is terrible and unacceptable!
2:22 I show how I measure Apoxie Sculpt to find exactly equal portions using a small digital scale.
2:50 This portion of my video is a working montage set to music. Some of it is sped up. After I mix the Apoxie, I roll it into a thick rope and place it around the weebly wobbly base. Then I press it into place and start adding beads. I chose red faceted beads to accent the red ornaments on the tree and bring in some sparkle to the base. The beads are super squirrelly today and they keep popping off and escaping. I'm not sure how many got away from me, but I finally quite filming and focused on reigning in the beads. Turns out they need to be pressed evenly on both sides so they don't pop off the opposite side. I ended up using 4 rows! Finally, I position it face down to cure.
5:27 Time to grout my purple funky chunky mosaic bird. There are a couple special bits that need to be taped off. Also, the eye is a druzy and I ALMOST forgot to tape it off! I spread the grout evenly on the whole bird, taking extra care near the taped areas. Once it is set up a bit and mostly clean, I can take the tape off.
6:45 A look at the repaired trees!!! Now it is more sturdy and it is also more weighty at the base.
7:04 I start the three sunflower centers using Apoxie Sculpt and beads. I like the centers to be a bit irregular since they are organic and not perfect. I start with the red one, using a gold druzy for the center and adding beads one at a time or in small strung sections. I also add yellow filati and irregular polished stone beads to the edge.
9:00 The second on is made with a vintage cabochon and lots of different beads for a really wild look. I add medium sized faceted beads to the little areas reaching out and trim off the excess Apoxie Sculpt.
10:20 The last one is started with a large black faceted bead. I only use strung beads on this one and it has a very tight look. The outer area I used deep red beads and it is very dark
10:50 A look at all the centers together.
11:48 BONUS: A quick look at the mosaic wine glasses my students made this weekend. I had six students and everyone made 2, so I put them all together and they look super great!
That's Putting It Together Ep. 131. Thanks for watching!!! See you next time.
