so when you try out a perfume in the store basically all you smell is the top note?

Yes. And the decision to buy or not to buy should not be based on top notes only. Spray it on a card or your wrist and try to wear it for the duration of the fragrance up to basenotes or better still ask the store SA for a sample. That way you can really try before you buy. The Z Signature pour homme is on another level quality and style wise. Also a very long lasting and sophisticated.
