I'd wait for the hardtop if I were you. They both the exact same kit, just different bodies. Same custom and racing parts. The hardtop kit has been modified to represent a decent 4-4-2 but can still be built as a F-85 Cutlass. I bought both, my convertible is built.

Thanks for the review sir ! I got this kit a few weeks ago. I’ve been thinking I’ll build it as a street machine, using the chassis from a spare ‘66 442 kit I’ve got. Maybe Cragars, maybe later style 442 rally wheels. Then you go and mock up that big slick in the wheel well….😳 You know, I’ve got a pro street ‘67 Chevelle chassis that will fit. Now, what can I do to the engine to “Hot Rod” it……. 🤔

I just ordered this kit from AutoWorld at closeout price of $14.99🙂 I should have ordered two because I actually want to build it two different ways. I also would have preferred a '65, but I still like it- especially as the custom version of it that I want to build. I want to build it with the custom front & rear and supercharged engine that hopefully will fit under the stock hood. Undecided about side pipes yet. I'm thinking cream color interior to simulate the beautiful parchment interior that I had in a '68 GTO many years ago and either Aztec Gold or Candy Green paint. The box art describes tires as red stripe or gold stripe(?) I would prefer narrow whitewalls. Will have to see wheels/hubcaps to make choice. That's how I'm imagining building the kit that is on it's way but I would also like to build it as a "day 2" type hotrod as your plan.

The '64 4-4-2 only offered a 4-speed stick. 4-barrel/4-speed/ dual exhaust! So you're just building it as a Cutlass. More of an issue, you may want to adjust the chassis so that the wheels are positioned correctly in the wheel wells. I like where you're headed with this...

In 1964, the only model of an Oldsmobile was the Cutlass in a convertible and a hardtop. AMT took over making Olds models for the GM division from Jo-han who made Oldsmobile promos and kits from 1956 to 1963. For 1965, AMT's only Oldsmobile kit and promo was the Dynamic 88 hardtop (with Starfire wheel covers). No one made a '65 Cutlass or 4-4-2 model in 1965. These AMT '64 Cutlass kits are exciting blasts from the past and we a lucky for the current production energy by Round2. If you are hoping for 1990s-on kit design in these kits, you'll be disappointed. Think AMT '64 Impala, that's the tech of this kit...a return to modeling circa-1964. Note: The original AMT Cutlass hardtop was not a 4-4-2. Round2 modified this kit to more closely resemble a '64 4-4-2.

It's better than not being released. I bought the '64 convertible on a whim and it has gobs of custom parts but almost the same engine and options. I never used any of the custom body parts ever on what they were meant for. Wheels, tires and stance then maybe a hood scoop. I find some of those acrylic metal flake paints are way out of scale. If you care about 1/25 vs 1/24 I think you will see that the flakes are freakishly huge in some brands of general art paint. I like the '65 -'67s better.

Good idea with the bigger tires. I’ve got to get some more tires, right now I really don’t have any options other than what comes with kits.
@SPSteve
@SPSteve 2 жыл бұрын
I agree the 65 442 is much more appealing, I had a white 65 442 with red interior 4 speed back in the 80's. It's nice having 64-87 Cutlass/442 Oldsmobile kits because there aren't that many, but it's hard to get excited about this model. They say the engine is new, but for being new it's not very impressive. It has a 2bbl carb, the heads lack definition, it has a Jetaway/Powerglide automatic when all 64 442's had 4 speeds. The steel axles through the oil pan are super lame. The molded in under-chassis components are super lame. The first year for disc brakes in an A body was 1967. I can't help but feel that Round 2 is just milking it. It looks like a total reissue of the mid 60's kit with no updates. Maybe there's a 64-65 Chevelle kit out there that the frame, floor pan, suspension and rear end can be used with this 64 Olds body? Good luck
@blizzy6392
@blizzy6392 2 жыл бұрын
This kit contains two sets of engine block halves: one with the original 'Jetaway' automatic transmission and one with a 4-speed manual transmission for the 4-4-2. The air cleaner was modified to a dual-snorkle 4-4-2 type. The original AMT '64 annual Cutlass hardtop kit was not a 4-4-2 model but Round2 reproduced this kit (after an absence of 57 years!) so that it could be built as a regular Cutlass, like the original kit, or a reasonable 4-4-2 model, which makes it more marketable to the muscle car fans. I say mucho cudos to Round2!
@SPSteve
@SPSteve 2 жыл бұрын
@@blizzy6392 You guys are the ones buying these kits. If you think this model is worth 39.99 then buy away, I'm sure Round 2 is glad you are. Like you said a 57 year absence, things have come a long way in the modeling world in that time, but not with this kit. This kit should be the poster child of what's wrong with the model car hobby. While armor and aircraft models continue to evolve and get better and better, model car buyers are stuck with this garbage.
@blizzy6392
@blizzy6392 2 жыл бұрын
@@SPSteve Disagree. I am an odd duck that likes old kits from the original "Golden Age." I love the rod and custom era of the '50s and '60s. I like kits that carry the spirit and flavor of the '60s car culture. If Round2 repackages old AMT and MPC, I'm there...crude as some of those kits were. If you prefer post-1980s muscle car kits with separate frames and suspension parts, go for it. I leave those kits to their fans. And speaking of the future, did you notice that this kit appeared once in 1964 then vanished for 57 years until Round2 did some modern magic that put it back on the shelf for us fans? What was that magic that put a thrashed kit back from the abiss? I think we're looking into the next phase of model kit making technology.
@SPSteve
@SPSteve 2 жыл бұрын
@@blizzy6392 If this kit was $19.99 it wouldn't be such a big deal, but it seems Round 2 tries to give the impression this is a new tool kit and that just isn't true and $39.99 is way too much money for this model. If you want to see what is available today in the model aircraft world, check out some Zoukie Mura brand kits on KZbin. Car models in general are so far behind and this is the level of detail car kit manufacturers should be aiming for. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b33GiKFufJWXbtU

@@SPSteve I don't disagree that kits' prices are too high. Why is an AMT kit $34.90 US and Revell $24.90 US? (Model Roundup prices). It seems like yesterday that the price tags were $34 (Cdn.), now they're $44-49. In the 2000s, Walmart sold AMT/Ertl kits made in China for $12.97 ($10 US). That all came to an end around 2007 then kits were over $30. Our Michael's craft stores were selling kits for $19.99 US with their discount coupon but the selection was extremely limited and wouldn't have included the AMT Cutlass kits. Now, they don't sell model kits anymore, so that's done. That aircraft kit you linked to was impressive, but what's the cost. Plus, you know what, if it were a car, I'd never build it. I don't do super detail. An AMT Trophy kit is my limit and my enjoyment on multiple levels. I can't control the prices of kits. It's take it or leave it and I'm not yet at leaving the hobby yet (my aging eyes and shaking hands might do that for me). Funny, looking at that detailed aircraft model reminded me of the Grand Opera. It makes the AMT '64 4-4-2 kit look like a '60s Frankie and Annette Beach movie by comparison. Cheesy but fun. To me, that's fine.

7:41 Careful how you 'hot rod' that 330 'Jetfire Rocket' V-8. If the intake system is too tall, the stock hood won't fit on the body. (Hence the "hideous" racing hood.) 10:02 The '64 Cutlass only had 4-wheel drum brakes. The two front disc brakes were merely a 1960's kid's wet dream (like those Lola GT Mk.6 custom wheels).
