Got to drive the 1976 Kenworth A Model glider kit truck with the twin stick in it. Watch till the end for some out takes.

A good friend of mine had a 64 KW with the twin stick, riding with him and watching him shift was very impressive, with all those gears, it could really pull

I'll bet. Back in the day, the problem wasn't all the gears. The trucks didn't have the power they do now, so you really needed a lot of gears. Those old-timers really had to work it to get down the road.

I would have left the crank up window in it, that was the only one I'd seen. Other than that, I'd agree with the unibuilt opening.. They did put the airbags under the sleeper like the unibuilt.

For as little as 'ol #76 is used it's probably not worth it and I am sure your boss has already thought this but one of the trucks my wife and I bought way back was a used COE Freightliner. I came from a fleet company of about 25 trucks or so. When they were about to trade it in it had a near new 13 speed in it. They didn't want to let that go so they swapped out a spare used standard geared 10 speed and installed that. Problem was top speed was about 55 mph. What we did instead of buying a whole new 13 speed tranny was we turned the 10 speed into a 15 speed. Only difference was the bolt-on back section of the tranny where the deep under gear package lived. They also flip a couple gears in the back, your 10 speed pattern reverses for the shift of 4th gear to 5th gear and the shift of the 9th gear to 10h gear. That ran her out easily to about 73 mph which worked a most states back then had a max 65 mph.

I think the biggest factor in what they did was the glider came with the brownie so they wanted to go that direction. I don't know if they even did any figuring on what the rear end ratios were or what the combinations would end up being when finished. It's been done for about a year now and I don't think they've put 15k miles on it yet. It's kinda funny when you have a '76 with that few original miles on it 😁

Ah.......the brownie came with it......well that makes sense then. I always like win stick as it seemed to give me more options when going over mountain passes and allowed more speed in cruise.......yet that speed bit me in the behind a few times. 😏

Sheeplily confess: I never knew when to shift the low-high range button

Most transmissions are 5 speed with a Hi-Lo range. The gear ratios a figured so you shift 1 thru 5 in low, 6 thru 10 in hi. The auxiliary transmission (usually called a Brownie) gives you an overdrive and some really low gears for heavy pulling at low speeds. They couldn't find a plain 5 speed to put in this truck but they did find a 10. So it's an unusual combination.

What motor i know ray used some v8 cats but couldn't quite here it in the video and great video by the way the content is great considering i grew listening to stories about rays old a models my father used to drive for him it brings back great memories for the bolth of us thank you

They were looking for a 3408 but they're hard to find. So they put in a 3406A. They talked about changing the rear ends and suspension but kept the ones that came under the glider. Turned out to be not a great match, as the top speed is 65.
