I have been singing for 55 years and I learnt at a very early age to listen to the best of singers from Classic through country, constantly listening to the vibrations of their sound and breathing. The thing is. There is more to classical singing than styling. It teaches how to sing properly. If you have classical bases, you can take the good voice conserving technique and apply it to pop, rock, salsa, and any other style. Classical singing preserves your voice and helps you sing masterfully. That is the thing that separates good singers from great singers

+Charlie Charlie Because many don't use proper technique. It is difficult to find a good teacher in the classical world. And I should have specified that the voice would be preserved longer than average. But even legendary classical singers lose the range and strength they had when they were young and at their peak. No singer can scape age.

Hard disagree. I am classically trained and learnt a plethora of habits that made it very hard to transition into pop and musical theatre. I have also had classical teachers to claimed they could switch between vocal productions and proceeded to demonstrate... their version of pop was so far away from what anybody heard on radio it simply painted them as delusional. While the basics of vocal production go across genres, all styles really deserve respect and precise expertise.

I am happy to discover your site! I am also in agreement with most of your ideas on vocal technique. As a classical singer and teacher of students who have won International prizes, I would like to add, that the reason that singers of pop-rock genres get vocal nodules quite easily at at a much greater percentage than classical singers, is that they do not use their muscles of support correctly and precisely because they are singing with a microphone.They don't need to project, so they simply do not support the soft dynamic. Since one of my specials is damage repair, I have had to teach your genre of singer to understand those muscles by first learning how to project properly and then use those same muscles and breath flow when singing in"pp". Thank you for your insights!

Heh 😅 I totally relate to everything you said… I love to sing both styles because I’ve been a “voice explorer” since when I was born…and my quite neighbours didn’t appreciate my “vocal experiments” 😆 I remember trying to imitate the chirping and sounds of every single bird I heard. I woke my parents up every night when I was a young kid, just to sing melodies I’ve heard during the day. Even though I’m not very loud, I noticed that when I sing in my head voice the volume appears to me as “sky high”, even i if I sing effortlessly. I’m a high soprano and singing the highest notes makes my whole head resonate and I literally “feel the sound” inside my body and all around me. It’s a pleasant experience, but sometimes neighbours don’t agree with me 🙄. I hope everyone will try to sing different styles. It’s so amazing how our voice can be such a shapeshifter and we can create so much beauty with it 🤗 Happy singing! 🎶🦋

I take voice lessons at a school in my local area and what you teach in your videos is in alignment with what my teachers teach. But it had never been made clear to me about the laryngeal positional differences when singing classical verses pop music. But you've given me an "oh, now I understand" moment, and I want to say, Thank You! Btw my school's teaching is based on classical style (because it is the healthiest) though they understand that very few of us are planning to sing classical music.

I fully understand what you are talking about. You have internalized the techniques of classical singing and made them your second nature. What it takes to sing pop is to forget those techniques and instead apply pop singing techniques. First and foremost get rid of the feeling to make a big sound by lowering the larynx automatically and open all resonances. It is like going the way back to the start position (normal speaking voice) if you know what I mean. In the end, it comes down to to be able to switch and apply the respective techniques for either style of singing. Juggling so to speak. It all starts in your mind and your imagination. Go from big to small.That's where the training sets in. As for pop singing just let it go and take it for what it is soundwise: probably just half of the sound you are able to produce. But that's just fine because that's how it is.

That is a wise way to do it. It is fairly easy to apply classical technique to pop songs but if you just you pop techniques it will be hard to develop some of the major building blocks that classical enforces.

Try to SPEAK your notes, without vibrato... I got so much mileage & range that I never knew had, because I was trained classically... you should sing like you SPEAK

Very helpful! My goal has always been to sing pop but I took 2 years of lessons with a classical teacher because that was all that was available in my area. I eventually got burnt out because she wouldn't teach me what I wanted to learn. Now, after a long hiatus, I'm taking another stab at it and going the self taught route. Ur video gave me some huge eye openers as to why I get frustrated trying to sing pop. Thanks a ton! Do u have any recommendations for books or videos to help me learn more about pop style?

You're better off with a teacher. I learned a lot self taught, but it was slow going compared to what I could do with a teachers help. Find one who will teach what you want, and work hard. Good luck.

I am currently training in classical although I've always sung pop music. I absolutely love singing classical but I don't understand how it helps the pop voice as the techniques and the larynx positions are different right? So since I don't sing pop much, I think I am slowly forgetting my natural ability to be able to hit notes in the chest voice as all my warmups are in the operatic tones..Idk what to do exactly.

Just practice singing in your chest voice and blend it with your head voice more. It's not like you can't sing pop songs anymore. Look at Charlotte Church, for instance!

It really doesnt... take it from someone who bought that lie & tries to train classically to enhance my pop singing... it hindered me & took me a while to untrain my classical technique so I could use my more marketable pop voice... find a teacher who KNOWS the difference & can not only explain it, but teach it... BEST advice I ever got about POP SINGING, is be Able to SPEAK your notes before you try to sing them.. that and SING how you SPEAK

Great teacher. I think there is also another difference that concerns more women than men: in classical, women sing mostly in head voice, where in pop it is more chest and mix.

I am not a singer but I tried 4 lesson of classical singing and 2 lesson of pop singing because I love singing so much. The required techniques for both styles are so different. I like singing classical / boardway musical because I can hear the rebounce of my voice. It is so interesting. Moreover, I think the classical techniques are quite useful in preserving the voice quality. Pop singing is the techniques that working with mic. In other words, the mic is the make up of the voice. I think the originality of the voice is important. It is a signature of a singer. I like singing pop music while I was a child. Now I like to sing without mic because I can know how to improve my voice quality in my own way. Every singer have their path.

My first language isn't English so I didn't understand what Justin meant by "and a sense of a little drop in the throat" when he was talking about laryngeal positions. Can anyone explain what drop means in this context? Or how it would be translated to Spanish? Does it mean to feel the larynx drop a little bit, or is it something else?
