It basically is connected to that in some sense. There you are correct. Those are the athletic competitions into manhood. Even for the Arcadian Wolf-Apollo as well.

Hail Mars!

The ancient song to Mars seems more concerned with the protection of (farm) land though, not only from war but also from diseases entering the crops, or the people. I always thought of the koryos as a more dynamic war band in the style of the Germanic comitatus, which would not seem to be a very close fit here. Could be wrong, of course.

There you are right regarding what the song to Mars is about. That is the thing regarding the Koryos, they are not just warriors or a war band with warriors just only focussed on war. Same how the Fianna (who scholars have identified with the Koryos), who were dedicated to the Morrigan, where also protectors of the people and the land. Wolf Apollo and his Ephebe and the wolf cult in Arcadia similarly are tied to youth initiation into the warrior cult, and also to the protection of the land, from both war and foreign invaders, but also tied to the gods, to keep away other harm to the well-being of the people. Apollo also being linked to diseases. Part of the Koryos tradition also being linked to cattle raiding as well. The Fianna, like the koryos, are semi-nomadic warrior bands serving the community as protectors and performing rituals tied to land and fertility. They are not mere warriors. Like how wolf Apollo (the archaic Apollo), is a god of the wolf light (twilight of dusk and dawn), the protector against enemies and disease, who kindles the light within the darkness of chaos. Both a destroyer and slayer of foes, but also a protector and a deity that can be appeased and protect from disease and harm that can come to the communities well-being. That is why they are saviour deities. They hold both the power of destruction and protection.

This is why Juno and the Morrigan and with Orpheus and Apollo also Hecate were important. Next to a figure like Leto with Apollo as well. Or Apollo's Korybantes linked to Rhea. They are warriors and protectors. Like the Fianna linked to the Sovereignty Goddess who is tied to the land, and the protection of the people from war, disease and other harm. Whilst they raid and protect cattle (being the wealth of the people). They keep the balance between the human realm and the divine. Hence they are wolves of the twilight. Guardians of the boundaries both of the land and tribe itself, but also spiritually. Upkeeping with the King the sacred balance tied to a Goddess like Juno or the Morrigan (linked to Danu). Horse sacrifice also ties into this as well, next to cattle and dog sacrifice (linked to Yemo). Yemo is tied to the social order, and is the son of the Sovereignty Goddess. She is tied to kingship and the warriors, who slay the serpent of chaos in all its forms to hold up the sacred cosmic order of the gods. Doing this gives the king the right to rule, and his warriors are there to do this sacred duty with him. His pack of wolves.
