For the registration number, you should save the old beam, mill it down to about 5mm and attach it to the new beam. Keep a bit of the old in the new

Cheers from across the pond in Oregon! Hey I am the guy who came clean about three years ago by telling you that when I watched your first episode I thought there was NO WAY you would finish the boat and if you did I thought the workmanship would not be that great. I came clean and confessed this to you and apologized to you. You responded by saying that at least I was man enough to admit I was wrong. NOW I just want to say that you guys have far EXCEEDED my wildest expectations. I am so impressed by both of you and the work you have done. ALSO your teamwork is such a healthy balance and good example of what a marriage should be. Jemma, you blow me away! You are so completely capable and I respect Simon so much for not running over you as many of us men have a tendency to do…. even with the best of intentions we have a hard time in that area on the whole. Your humor… goofy as hell but really funny with just enough naughty innuendo to crack me up but not offend those who appreciate a PG/PG-13 rating. You are two very real and very good human beings and I can’t help but to cheer you on whole-heartedly. Thank you for doing what you do and for doing it so well. Thank you for sharing it with us! Crack on!

You could take the old beam with the numbers on, cut away most of the beam material so that what is left is a plaque with just the lettering that could be varnish and attached anywhere. Great episode.

Gemma, from living in Texas most of my life, you need to hydrate and keep those electrolytes up. Drink plenty of water and keep some oranges handy as well as keeping under as much shade as possible and you should do better in the heat! It might be worthwhile to string a tarp up to keep you both in the shade. Take care of yourself!

I have a feeling that the bottom will be rather better than you would think. Any ship made from wood rots from the top, it is the change between wet and dry during the tides and the weather changes but wander around any coastal areas and look at what survives, the bits that were always in the water!

Regarding the flexing of the deck: Rest assured that the deck planking and supporting structure will flex in a heavy sea. I served on wooden hull minesweepers, 800 ton ocean minesweepers and 400 ton coastal minesweepers. In particular I recall watching the aft deck flex as we were taking the tremendous swells from a tropical storm off our port bow - USS Vireo, MSC 205, 1962-63. Our "mother" ship, USS Epping Forest, was 600 yards astern and at times all we could see was her radar antenna on the top of the mast. At other times it looked like that big ship was bearing down on us as she rode the top of swell.

Just an idea with respect to the beam with the boatbuilders registration number. Cut out that section of the beam then take it the shop and cut it on the bandsaw say 25 mm thick and you have a bit of original wood with the original numbering that you can mount anyway convenient and on show. You could even put it through the planer too taking off the minimum so you could make it all fancy.😳

Hey Gemma, heat stroke is nothing to sneeze at and I’m glad you took a little time out - I once incurred it on a real hot day and it was a terrible feeling. The humor with the electrical and your hair standing up was so funny - you and Simon both have a good sense of humor which so adds so much. The wood working is spot on. What an entertaining episode.

Get yourselves two or three 3/4's filled sandbags. Two to set the deck beams on when cutting and one to set on top. Then Gemma can sit on the hold down sandbag. Much less rock and roll and Gemma gets to sit down on the job ♥ I'll suggest fully bedding the end grain of your deck beams in adhesive is an important longevity detil. Protect all of your endgrain from water and moisture the best way you can. Gemma was able to clean up the squeeze out beautifully when the adhesive was wet. That is a great solution! 😊

Gemma I hope by now you are well recovered ❤

Gemma and Simon, you 2 are awesome! Be careful about spending the whole day in the sun, heat exhaustion is no fun and usually takes a day or two to recover from, don't wear dark clothes.
