I think the reason discourses on religion and even politics do not get anywhere is that people try to convince the other party of whatever they believe in. It is more challenging, psychologically, for people to backtrack from a position they already hold than form new ones. The nature of our debates turns people into hardliners because we think pummeling people with our opinions till they yield means we're right. Everybody has their path to enlightenment; give people the grace to find theirs.
