Ep. 190 1/2 GROUTING THE LAST PANEL FOR THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!
My name is Julie Mazzoni and I will be focusing on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic for the next little while. It is a 36 foot long, 161 square foot mosaic going in a niche on a busy street corner in Dunwoody, GA. I am partnering with mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman. We are using glass and porcelain tile with thinset and silicone. Our substrate is Hardie Backer With Hydro Defense Technology Fiber Cement Waterproof Backer Board. In today's video, I am grouting my last panel for The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic!
0:35 I'm using Mapei Flexcolor pre-mixed grout in Armor, which is a medium gray. With any grout, it is best to follow the instructions from the manufacturer. In this case, it says to wipe down the surface before spreading the grout.
0:50 I start spreading the grout. I have allowed plenty of time for this process, so I settle in and enjoy the process. There is a little bit of height difference between some of the tiles and the glass, so I have to make sure everything is uncovered. And I squeegee off any excess grout with my little finishing tool.
2:53 Now I wipe off any grout with a damp sponge. Once it has hazed over, I can come back and scrub off the haze. Then I buff with a dry shop towel.
3:50 I flip the mosaic around and start over with the other side. It is important to avoid the screw holes.
7:05 I show how much grout is left from a 1 gallon bucket after grouting panels 1-6.
7:19 That's it for now. It is now a waiting game before we can do the final installation. We are going to play it safe and install when the night temperatures are above 50 degrees for 3-5 straight days and there is no rain. Jennifer thinks we will have a window in February, but I predict waiting until March as it has to fit our schedules as well!
That's Putting It Together, BONUS Ep. 190 1/2. Thanks for watching. See you next time.
