Ep 2: Neon Genesis Evangelion on ABS-CBN

In 1999, ABS-CBN had the pick of the litter of mecha anime to pit against GMA's Gundam. Their choice? Evangelion.

I still find it amazing that of all the mecha shows of the 90s they can choose from, somehow they landed on Evangelion. I'm sure many 90s-early 2000s kids watched it on TV and got confused with the story (I am one of them), only to find out years later how dark the show actually is and wondered how the hell ABS-CBN got away with it.

This is definitely not the last time ABS-CBN aired some out of the box anime like Evangelion. Another anime directed by Hideaki Anno entitled His and Her Circumstances was also aired every Saturday mornings 10:30 AM (I cannot recall what exactly). For some, it was a typical romance anime. But since this is directed by Anno, or course there are some themes that are unsuitable to younger viewers (slight spoiler) such as teenage marriage, same sex relationship, etc. It was reaired on Hero TV as *North Hills High* Also, ABS-CBN aired Maria Watches Over Us or Maria-sama ga Miteiru. For some, it is a story between Catholic high school girls having its own club. I was clueless back then when it was aired and I find it boring. But ever since it was also aired on Animax in 2008, I discovered that its anime genre is _yuri_ or opposite of Boy's Love and I definitely love the sisterhood of the characters. And since you mentioned End of Evangalion which is an OVA, ABS-CBN also manages to air some OVAs like Saber Marionette J Again which was aired after Saber Marionette J. Few years later, ABS-CBN aired two obscure OVAs dubbed as "Limited Edition Anime" which they aired them *one* time - MAPS and Rayearth. These two are really quite disturbing, especially the latter since everyone are already familiar with Magic Knight Rayearth. The Tagalog dub of those two OVAs are completely lost.

I couldn't imagine how ABS literally got away with Evangelion na inere nila yung mga sobrang bigat ng themes neto at graphic talaga minsan yung scenes without even getting reprimanded by MTRCB, but I guess because back then as you said, anime was once seen as kids stuff and even GMA themselves didn't catch the ire of MTRCB. I guess it's just ABS being themselves who are pretty infamous for going beyond of what is acceptable in PH television, to the point that it led them to get canned by the government. These days sobrang sensitive na ng MTRCB with their ratings and they're very hell-bent in sanitizing and whitewashing PH media and sometimes even going as politically biased during the Duterte period (i.e., censoring films and documentaries that were going against the government or criticizing the government for their abuses)
