Ep. 20 - How To Treat Marine Velvet

In this video, I'll show you how I treated marine velvet, and some tips on what I would do differently if it ever occurs again.
Our quarantine tank paid for itself a million times over in this case. We stress the need to quarantine in many of our videos and without those steps in place, we could have lost ALL of our fish! It was only 24 hours from the time the first signs appeared until the first fish (a beautiful white tail bristletooth tang) died. In this video we'll show you what we did to try to save our bonded pair of snowflake clownfish.

Guess why I am here watching this video on a Saturday...got a fish at diver’s den with velvet. Same exact story as yours. Learned my lesson the hard way. Even premium priced fish gets you velvet. Now draining my display tank to catch all the fish and moving to QT.

I had 2 clownfish. A Percula and an occy. They were amazing together for the last two months. I bought a new coral from an LFS i've never been to. Within 2 days of putting the coral in, the clowns (only two fish in my nano) passed away. :( How did you identify velvet vs brook? I'm still at a loss as to which one I had.

Brook tends to look quite different from Velvet, but it is easy to confuse Velvet with Marine Ich. I would recommend checking out the website or forum posts by Humblefish, he has a lot of really great information about how to identify the different illnesses and how to try to treat them.

i had 2 frostbite clowns, i think my tank already had velvet in it when i purchased them from another clown that had came from petco, the female died pretty quick after i did a fresh water dip on her. the male i moved into a hospitial tank w coppersafe - hes been in there for about a week now after the death of its mate & ive just started to get him to eat again 2 days ago with some garlic on frozen brine shrimp he also seems to be alot more active now because he was just staying at the bottom of them tank. hopefully he will live.

I lost 13 fish within 48 hours. Some of them that has been in the tank for a year.

First of all sorry your lost I have help a aquatic store fight velvet ick over the years I can tell you it’s a daunting task it does save the fish live but you need to act really quick if not the fish is done

Immediately lower the salinity to 1.009 the fish will be fine and leave it there for 2 weeks. This will kill velvet and cryptocaryon irritants. Better still when you first but new fish but them in your quarantine tank for 3 to 4 weeks to 1.009 this way if they are infected at the store you will never get a outbreak because the low salinity will kill velvet and ich. It will also kill flukes. Don't be afraid to lower the salinity that much I've done it many times and the fish will be perfectly fine. Good luck 👍🇱🇷

Just lost my powder blue tang a maroon clown and a fox face with in a week super upsetting just got 1 damsel and a baby blue tang left wish them luck

Thank you for sharing so sad I last my pets also on marine velvet 13 tangs I only have clean up shrimp and fire shrimp in my 130 RedSea Reefer tank I took my old bio cube 32 out it’s going to be my hospital tank You think in 2 month my tank will be ready

I'm so sorry to hear about the fish you lost! :( Marine velvet is a nasty, terrible disease. The recommended fallow period for velvet is 6 weeks, so if you treat/quarantine outside of the infected system for two months it should be OK. Velvet is so bad we actually waited a little longer than that before adding anything new... JUST IN CASE! Best of luck getting started again. Losing fish in this manner is heartbreaking.

Serene Aquatic everyday I was waking up and seeing my friends dieing that was bad I am using my old biocube 32 for qt only thing is I got a make sure everyone is getting alone and water is good I put prozi and copper end of the month I am going to flash the system see how they do

@@alexandravivaldi9993 If you run prazi pro and copper at the same time make sure you have the tank well oxygenated. Prazi can have quite an impact on it.

Serene Aquatic I simply make the Ionic Silver with a generator you can buy online. I have a blue tang that had Velvet and was in the process of dying when I put him in a bucket with tank water, then I poured about 10 oz (large glass) and let the tang sit in it for two hours and he was good as new. No issues and I have the tang now for one year so far.

Thank you for the feedback. It's been a while since I made this video... did I have nets involved? I can't even remember hehe. I tried to gently dump them from one container to the other whenever I could but I agree that nets aren't generally very good to use. I haven't had the issue so much with clownfish, but with fish like my angels, they end up getting their spines caught in the net and it's a struggle to get them free. I always feel terrible so I've tried to move away from using them wherever possible.
