Ep. 204 TWO MORE FIGURES IN THE MOSES STRIKING THE ROCK MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti. The first mosaic is Moses Striking the Rock.
0:05 Recap - I show the design for Moses Striking the Rock in the desert with some people. I am working on two figures with their backs to the viewer.
0:26 Here's where I'm starting - I've finished Moses and the figure of the woman. I have also started on the baby. I want to make some great progress this week, so I'm going to work on the two more simple figures.
1:04 I start by covering the parts I'm not working on to control the shards.
1:19 The two figures each have two colors and they each need at least three tones. I then show the glass that I have selected.
2:08 I make a few minor modifications to the design since it is now blown up and I can see the detail better.
3:00 I start with the head band. I want it to appear twisted, so I cut the pieces to show that. Then I make a pattern for the rest of the headdress. I cut the pieces out and lay them on my glass. Then I use a scoring tool and running pliers to break the pieces. Next, I nip any excess glass off and then grind the glass.
4:26 All the pieces are cut out, but it looks too dark to me. So I make some changes, adding more of the lighter tones. Then I show how I change out one small area to make it lighter by cutting off a piece of glass and using it as a template. I repeat the process a few times to make the changes.
8:05 Once I have it fixed, I peel off the shelf paper and wipe off each pieces. Then I can start cutting it down and adhering the pieces. This takes a bit of time as the length needs to be nibbled down so the pieces all fit once they are spread apart a bit for grout. The interstices are pretty tight, but this is a necessary step.
11:52 I start on the tunic for the first figure. I am using tones of blue, with just a little bit of the darkest tone, which is the same as the headband glass.
13:10 I show how much the pieces have expanded when I get to a skinny piece and it doesn't fit at all!
14:22 The first figure for this week is finished!
14:23 I show the amazing yellow glass that I will use for the second figure. I wish all glass could be like this, with all three tones in one piece! So great! Then I get the second headdress pieced. Not show: all the grinding.
16:54 I start on the green shawl on the second figure. This is a cooler green than I used on the woman in green.
17:46 I am able to use the color variation of the glass to cut one piece and then cut that down.
18:00 I show all the progress so far and SURPRISE: almost done with the baby!!!
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 204. Thanks for watching! See you next time.
