Never seen such a luthier telling so generously about its art. Thank you very much because as I never did that now I'm going to fit my new cello with a great vibration but a too short bridge. It will be so fun.

With a banjo though the perfect pitch is when you throw it and it doesn't hit the edge of the dumpster.

First of all thank you so much for those priceless knowledge you passed on us. 1. the sound post is becoming less mystical to me. I deal in selling violin, and when violin arrived from maker the soundpost isn't attached, how to sell a bad sounding violin? I was forced to learn how to set up soundpost, I got my knowledge through youtube and forums and yours is the most comprehensive that I've seen so far. 2. Right on spot on A and E strings, now I understood that you just have to fiddle with the bottom of the soundpost. it works like magic! thank you so much! lastly. I have a few question... 1. Why are the both end of the soundpost are slanted? 2. is it all right if I sanded the edge of each end giving it somewhat rounded instead of a sharp edge. I usually do it so the soundpost will have maximum contact with the top and bottom. sometimes the edge is much higher.

Hi, your crabs are great and very helpful. I would like to ask, I deal with old German and Italian violins. I tune the sound post for many hours until I find the strong sound on one side and the soft and sweet one on the other..., but I have a problem, after a few hours the sound changes as if I didn't tune it... familiar to you? what can be done ?

As someone who knows admittedly nothing of violin making, why is it that you cannot simply glue the soundpost in place once it has been adjusted into the ideal position?
@EdgarRuss5 жыл бұрын
Great question! The reason that we do not glue it in a final position is, that the position is ideal for every musician in a slightly different position. a little like the wheel convergence of your car. Why the hell don't they just leave it in its ideal position after they build the car. 🤔 Thanks and all the best ER

Thankyou for exellent explaining about the secrets of the perfect sound. In episode 21 you explained when you are "almost" satisfied with the positioning of the soundpost. Maybe perfect in the top position. Then (you said) try to adjust the bottom position, fine tuning E and A string qualities. Assuming it has found its "perfect" position in the top. What will the effect be on E and A when then moving its bottom position ? I am from Norway, playing the Hardangerfiddle. I have two very good instruments that i of course want to take out the full potensial from. I am almost there, but want to await Your answere or a follow up where you left in episode 21.:-) How to fine tune (in/out/back/forth) the soundpost in the bottom and what will the results be ?

I HAVE A GUANERI VIOLIN FOR THE past 60 years. Recently sound post fell because I was changing new string. I gave it to a violin player in south India. He installed the sound post. But I don't enjoy my previous sound. Bass section more vibrant than treble section. Any readjustment needed to do?

Move it close to the bridge! Or maybe move first the bridge to its initial position!

Hey, how do you polish the sound post to the right angle? To this day I have used sandpaper, is that ok? What is the desired thickness? Of which company?
@kyproset6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your videos, I find them very informative and important. As my luthier is not very close to where I live, can you please tell me how moving the SP in the different directions would affect the sound.
@EdgarRuss6 жыл бұрын
Dear Kypros, sorry for my long break. Regarding what the soundpost effects by moving is explained in video episode 5. But stay tuned and I will make some more videos regarding this matter. Now that I have a better microphone equipment I want you to hear also the difference. all the best meanwhile ER

Dear Edgar, thank you, I watched episode 5 a few times and I hold it as the bible. The perfect starting point. What I'm concerned though is from there, what are sound effects of moving the SP. Looking forward to new episodes.

Such interesting videos!! Does the sound post push the wood around the f hole and raise it. I just bought a new violin 🎻 but I am not sure if that's a serious issue. Thank you!!
@EdgarRuss5 жыл бұрын
Yes but very little! In some cases it is more visible. But it should not be visible for everyone. Only if the light is in specific angle to the top. Would love to see you violin. I am worried that there is something not exactly the way it should. Bt the question is: ow does it sound? If it sounds wonderful.....Great! let me know ER

What is your experience on the thickness of the sound post? How do you think it effects the general sound. Plus whats that on your wrist? A Nomos? I like it.
@EdgarRuss6 жыл бұрын
😂 No it´s not a Nomos from Glashütte. It is a ROYAL London. Thin light and decent.
@EdgarRuss6 жыл бұрын
as to the soundpost thickness: I believe that 5,8mm for violin 6,2 to 6,5mm for viola 10,5mm for cello 19mm for doublebass is a good standard diameter in case I face wolf tone problems I try it with thicker ones. the thinner it is the more you guarantee free top belly surface. The thicker it is the more you "steel"t hat precious vibrating surface. Every square millimeter counts. Especially on a violin. good or good? have fun all the best ER
