Grand Adventure

The National Park Service pronounces it "mo-go-yown", whereas the Forest Service says it's pronounced "muggy-own". Whatever, it seems like a distinction with little difference to us. Between intense summer heat, thick wildfire smoke, and incidents like what happened to us here at the Mogollon Rim, our 2021 season seems to be one of the best laid plans going awry. We nevertheless share a wonderful visit to these pine-covered highlands of Arizona, including Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, ancient ruins of prehistoric inhabitants at Shoofly Village, the Payson Campground & RV Resort, and of course the stunning natural beauty of the Rim itself.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a KZbin channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you'll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We've now transitioned from "long-timing" for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.
We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

This was perfect timing Mark I know you added this video last year but I just purchased this summer a Park Model as a base camp in Payson. Excited for all the adventures to explore. Lots to do the next 6 months. Your video was outstanding and the most informative of anything I have seen so far. Will be in my new home next week Thanks for all your Grand Adventures videos. We visited this area in March a few years ago. Still snow on that pass where the tiny visitor center is, and none of the campgrounds were opened for the season yet. But the air was squeaky clean and clear. I can hardly belief the air is still hazy down there. Bummer!

Just came across your beautiful video. My wife and I (from Scotland) had our best vacation ever, when we RV’d Arizona and Utah about 10 years ago,.Starting from Phoenix , taking in Sedona, Winslow, Lake Powell, Zion NP, Flagstaff etc and then returning to Phoenix - we just loved it all. Unfortunately nowadays we are restricted to Scotland and the UK , due to having a great collie dog that has separation issues 🥲. But watching this video brings back such fantastic memories and I thank you for that. However this now means that I will have to sit and catch up on the rest of your videos. Keep well and stay safe. Looks like episode was videoed a few weeks ago when sky’s were clear & Payson was HOT. On top of the rim was perfect then, but now is cold (end of Sep). I had to come down below the rim this past week as nighttime temps in Woods Canyon Lake area dipped into the 30’s, with cool fog in the mornings. So you went from free dispersed to a $$$ shoulder-to-shoulder in Payson? What about the NF campgrounds? After Labor Day most were empty midweek and this year they had a good percentage that were non-reserved for walk-in’s. Spur roads off 260 to Bear Canyon and Knoll are ROUGH, so your viewers need to be prepared for that next year. Lastly, lots of dispersed posted off limits this year due to logging operations designed to thin forest out and prevent Calif style fires. Love your drone shots. Kept looking for my rig!
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
It was warm but not hot, and you're right -- we were there a few weeks ago (we always put the filming dates in the video description, so that folks can reference the time of year). The temps during your visit sound wonderful. Had we known better we definitely would've come in on 260 instead of 87. The problem is it was Sunday afternoon and once we realized our ideal spot was now off limits, we were running out of daylight. Having to work starting 8 a.m. Monday morning, we gave up in frustration and headed to Payson. We would not have had enough daylight to get to the camping areas off 260, and having not yet been there ourselves we had no idea how successful we'd be in the dark. So it was an easy decision. Not particularly what we wanted, but it worked out well.

Your mogollon rim actually has no letter A at the end but a O, Mark. I have lived on the east side of Phoenix for 45 years and have been going up on the rim every summer. Now that i"m retired i dispersed camp off route 87 in the Happy Jack area most of summer. ( when not traveling ) I"ts all coconino national forest. They started closing forest roads this year because of the high volume of off road vehicles tearing up the forest. Phoenix has grown so large its putting way more pressure on the forest. ( big city dwellers that dont care about keeping the forest clean and beautiful )

@@robhebbs7960 😄 no spell check deployed. Don't get us wrong, we fully understand why the USFS took those steps. We were just frustrated that we ended up on the wrong side of that decision, for that site would've been so perfect. But many natural areas across the country are feeling that kind of pressure, and it's understandable how the Rim area would be such a valued playground for folks from the Phoenix area. @GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it! That wasn't an effort to cast aspersions on the Apache; however, in the context in which that comment was used, it was accurate for Gowan was hiding from Apache attacks at the time. We're not casting judgment on who's right and who's wrong; however, if you narrow circumstances enough to a sufficiently short period of time, someone's an aggressor and someone's a victim. It's only when you expand the frame of reference that roles can change.

Too bad about Mogollo Ridge being closed for camping. Could it possibly be that the forestry is trying to re-establish the growth in the area and not just from littering? The campground didn’t look too bad for a campground. Lots of greenery between sites. Looked like you had the entire lake all to yourself and Zoe. @@Tom67X I wish we were still in the area, but we'll back pocket this for possibly next fall. We almost ended up in that area this season but opted for the Payson area instead. Right now we're in West Texas, heading eastbound.

Live in El Mirage AZ. Damn fires close a lot of area to camping this past summer. Sad.

We don't doubt it, Gordon, but in this instance the closure appeared to be for regeneration and revegetation.

Being from Arizona I have been to those areas and they are beautiful. Thank you very much for the video very nice job. And I would guess the forest service had close that area you were looking for because of trash. I don’t understand how people can not pack out the trash that they bring with them and leave it just as clean as the day before they got there.
@GrandAdventure

Thank you Tim, and we couldn't agree more on people trashing places. In this case my guess is that they closed that area to revegetate it, although that spur road along the rim has become very well established and it will take many years to revegetate.

Marc, I was wondering what area this was, in relationship to Flagstaff. I looked and saw that it is southeast along that crescent of national forests extending down to the southeast end of Arizona. Definitely out of the parched area and plenty high to avoid hot temps. Nice location with lots to explore in an extended stay. Unfortunately, it seems that you must first explore the area try to find out if it is available for remote camping. I was watching you puppy at the beginning and could see him saying, "Why am I here... what's with the leash... This ain't right." Gord

It is surprisingly verdant up there, Gord, and different from most people's impressions of Arizona. And yep, Zoe would much rather be off-leash, but she's nevertheless become must more accustomed to being attached to one.

Thanks @TravelRN910! We use Cyberlink Power Director, and have for many years. We like their pricing structure far better than Adobe's. In fact everything we use and like is in our Amazon shop, including Power Director www.amazon.com/shop/GrandAdventure . We only list there things that we use and recommend ourselves in our video production and RV travel. (Disclosure: items in our Amazon shop earn the channel a small commission. It doesn't cost any more to shop Amazon via our store, but it helps to support the channel.)

I love the High country but that park has terrible reviews. Just about every one says it's a dust bowl and the spots are very tight. Not much good to say about the management either and absolutely no cancellations even if you have a medical reason.
