I remember Neil talking of the 'god of unknowns' that when man couldn't understand something in nature it associated it with some form of a deity. He gave an example of when people were considered possessed by demons until science discovered epilepsy.

True. There should be a clear distinction between the two. Personally, I'm not an atheist but I believe in science explaining what religion does not have the answers for, or if it does then it's not an objective truth that can be proven. Scientists can account for only about 4% of the energy in the universe. And that is including all the dark energy and dark matter that they don't even have evidence for. So for me the 96% will remain to be God until they can prove otherwise.

If we interact with God on a personal level and have an encounter with him you can know that he is gracious and merciful. You will never know until you encounter him on your own. It's hard to explain it to someone who hasn't encountered him
