Dinghy Cruising with Kingfisher and Trim

Dinghy Cruising with Kingfisher and Trim

7 ай бұрын

We leave our map behind and go where the wind takes us up this remote river. Trim is a completely self sufficient tiny home on the water. We compare navigation aids, chat about dinghy cruising philosophy and waste time with a fishing rod in the Australian summer.

Agree wholeheartedly Josh. My phone has refused to charge due to moisture. Plus with my ageing eyesight I have to remove my sunnies and put on my close-up reading glasses to read the screen which is inconvenient when you are holding on tight in windy conditions. With paper charts I keep them all in an A3 folder in plastic sleeves and I can generally read them with sunnies on.

Great video Josh, thanks from sunny Melbourne! I'm hoping to get up to NSW for a raid sometime next year. Inspired by your exploration, I just went to renew my expired Navionics subscription and found they've increased it to $89.99! Hmmm maybe Santa can contribute....
@DinghyCruisingKingfisher
@DinghyCruisingKingfisher 7 ай бұрын
$90?? That’s crazy. I will be rethinking next subscription if that’s the case. A plotter starts to become viable over time at that price. Thanks for the heads up.

Good philosophical perspective Josh. Getting out in the environment and challenging ourselves makes us better people no doubt. What ever you do, dingy sailing, sea kayaking, hiking or even tinnie camping expends energy and connects us to the environment. It gives us a better perspective on the world and our place in it. Well done and thanks for the great vids. I am looking for a Welsford Navigator! They look like a great little boat to sail.

Hi Ross, the motoring back wasn’t very exciting I’m afraid, just the roos and jellyfish to break up the racket of the engine. Thanks for dropping by and commenting on the vid. J

@@DinghyCruisingKingfisher Saké is even better while I'm sitting in front of the fire like this. Looking forward to your next cruise. By the way, your expressed sentiments toward the end are, in a way, echoed by the ancient Chinese poets/landscape painters, as written about by David Hinton (and, of course, by Kerouac and Snyder in Dharma Bums, etc.)

It’s surprising how little water it takes to fry an iDevice. I lost one on the trip from Swansea to Newcastle because I had the iPad mounted under the hatch, and even though I have Paradox and the hatch was almost completely shut it only took few drips directly onto the lightning port to cook it. Solution. I’ve moved the mount right up under the front windscreen where no water can reach, and, Amazon sell cheap refurbished iPads for around $200 so if I do fry another one I don’t lose the considerable cost of a phone. I was thinking of going to go up there after New Year’s Day for a few days so you beat me to it - or making another attempt to get up the Manning all the way to Taree. Might be less movies around on the Manning.

Yeah, lots of caution relying on them - quite surprised yours got wet in the Paradox. Good luck on your upcoming voyages and all the best to your family for the festive season. J

@@DinghyCruisingKingfisher It was literally a few drips. Because I didn’t have the hatch fully shut breaking waves over the boat forced their way under the front of the hatch, along the deck under the hatch and over the hatch seal and a few drops ran across the roof and dropped down into the lightning port, and it was plugged in recharging at the time. I had backup - another iPad and a phone. Won’t happen again. Best wishes over the Christmas period.

Excellent adventure and well done video. I'm my area (utah) any freshwater sailing is done with constant roar of motorboats buzzing about, but I didn't see a single one in your video. Do you edit that out? Or enjoy solitary time out there for 3 days?
