The city of Erie, Pennsylvania was founded in 1795 at the site of an early French fort due to its location on Presque Isle Bay, a natural 5.8-square mile harbor protected by the peninsula of what is today Presque Isle State Park. These waters sheltered from the open lake allowed Commander Oliver Hazard Perry to construct America's Lake Erie naval fleet during the War of 1812 to gain control of the Great Lakes from the British, and go on to victory at the historic Battle of Lake Erie at Put-In Bay, Ohio. We've been camping at Lampe campgrounds since it opened and spend a week there every july to fill up our freezer with walleye fillets! And, the Fish commission just added a new fish cleaning station at Lampe marina. There is much to do in Erie and you covered it really well!

Thanks, Rick! That's a great campground for a quick getaway for you. It's very well cared for, spacing is very good, it's not overpriced, and the camp hosts are marvelous -- I spent 30 minutes spontaneously chatting with them the first night while they were on their rounds. And as for Finger Lakes wineries, I attended and filmed a tasting just last night at one right down the road from where we're staying this week.

I may be a New England native, but after calling the western US home for 20 years I'm suffering through green sensory overload right now. If you thought that this episode was green, wait until you see next week's. 😁 We've got some amazing places on our itinerary that I can't wait to get to. Some of them are above your price point just because of the nature of where they are (southern New England in particular comes to mind - Massachusetts and Rhode Island rates are especially egregious), but some of the others will be surprisingly inexpensive -- especially the Canadian ones, where already somewhat reasonable rates get discounted for us yanks by the exchange rate, currently 26%.

If you like light houses, just down the road in NY is the Barcelona Lighthouse it is the first gas fired light in the US. The gas came from seeps in a stream nearly a mile east. It was piped to the lighthouse in hollowed out saplings.

Yep, it's gorges here in the Finger Lakes this week. 😉 We enjoyed Erie. Honestly, it was one of our stops this season that I was least excited about, but it under-promised and over-delivered. There's a whole lot of PA that I'd like to spend time in, but there's only so much ground you can cover in one season, and Erie at least gave us the chance to fill that state in on our camping map.

@@GrandAdventure Sara’s has one big advantage. It’s at the doorstep of Presque Isle. That’s about it! While we were there it was very hot. Everyone in the entire park had their AC on. Power levels dropped to 100 volts. Our breaker on the pole kept tripping so I shut everything off that was electric. We ran our refrigerator and hot water on propane. I knew we were in danger of burning up our AC unit at that low voltage but we had to leave it on for our dog. As long as the AC 20 amp breaker wasn’t tripping I figured we were gonna be ok. There are a lot of seasonal campers at Sara’s and they’re packed in there. We walked around the park and most of them have just enough room to open their awning. I think you chose a better place to stay. If you’re venturing up to New York check out our historic home town of Lockport. The Erie Canal runs right through it and there’s some cool stuff in Western New York including a water fall.

Fabulous episode, Marc. I loved the early spring images along Lake Erie in both kinds of weather. Some of the scenes you covered were epic of the area... especially the fog scene with Canadian Geese. Those house boats along the bay. Were they moored in place or supported on piers?... if you know. Did you ever get a chance to kayak in the Bay or was that completely rained out by the time you were scheduled to moved on? Hey, I just bought a 20" folding bike from Tern. What a great bike for exploring these kinds of places that doesn't take up much room in my RV. What a fun episode... Gord

Congrats on the e-bike, Gord! It's on my (lengthy) wish list. Thanks for your usual kind words. The houseboats were moored. I had intended to kayak through some of the lagoons at Presque Isle but got rained out on Saturday. Then, Sunday was our moving day. It's a pity, because that would've been some truly fascinating paddling. I may get out in the Finger Lakes this Saturday, but I'm leaning against it because quite honestly, the shorelines of the lakes here are somewhat boring for kayaking with their straight, featureless shorelines. My next good opportunity should be on Lake Champlain. We're splitting our stay on Champlain between two campgrounds and two episodes, and the second of those is at one of my favorite spots on the entire lake where I used to frequently windsurf back in the day. So I have a special attachment to water recreation at that location, and I'm hoping that the weather cooperates.

Sounds like a great immediate itinerary coming up. Looking forward to it as well. Again, great coverage of Presque Isle and Erie. I didn't realize there was all of that to see. I really liked the RV Park you stayed at and not too expensive. My Tern is a regular light weight folding peddler... not electric. However, I have my eye on one of those electric ones as well, at some point, when I get a bigger motorhome. I wanted to get back into biking again and not so much hiking. So I'm in training doing 22-33 miles a day in loops around an 11 mile fantastic paved trail circuit. My legs are coming back stronger in a fairly short period of time. Butt has broken in and got tough already. 😊 Gord
